After hearing Don MacLean's American Pie on the radio, we were saying at home that Buddy Holly would have been 71 now.

Would his work have been as well remembered if he were still living?

Possibly not but do any of you have a view?

Hi Ian. Good question. All of Buddy's hit songs were written during a period of about eighteen months. Buddy did have the ambition to open a recording studio to foster new talent, and he may have gone into production along with his songwriting talents.

Eddie Cochran was also multi talented, though his legacy is confined to three or four hit songs. I would say that probably he and Buddy would have followed Conway Twitty into the field of Country music and had lasting careers there.

One of the great imponderables.

Would Lennon/McCartney, the Stones, and a thousand other artists have plundered his work and used his influence if he hadn't died? Maybe.

Don McLean would have had to find something else to write about for his first project and hit.

The Hollies would presumably have had to find another name.

Certainly he's a favourite of country artists so that would have been the obvious direction to go.

Paul Anka on Parkinson tonight said that Buddy was learning to fly and may have put pressure on the pilot that fateful night in February 1959. Apparently he loved flying.

Perhaps he would have left music altogether?

Michael Winner came on Parky and did lots of name dropping, apparently he stayed in Princess Margarets hospital bed, she wasn't there at the time, knows Philip Green (mentioned a few times) and Marlon Brando rang him regularly... Rolling Eyes

I switched off after that, so missed Paul Anka.....
