The presenter now says... " This is BBC Radio Two, Online. On Digital and FM. Then the news presenter says 'BBC Radio News'. So the News Jingle will not go... Shocked

They tried the online, digital and FM a few years back Mark but it 'slipped back' to the 88-91fm.

Personally I think the new one is a bit of a mouthful.

I think a lot of people have been talking about the network ditching the old news jingle and adding this new one? Instead of shelling out money get the presenter at the time to announce it..

Daft! The birthday was a perfect opportunity to update this ten year-old jingle (and one or two others). To change the strap, but not the ident, now sounds very half-hearted for a station that prides itself on progressive evolution. That jingle is a quarter of the age of the station!

I guess their argument is they need to keep the chord arrangement intact or change every jingle (da-da-daaaaa - da-da-dum - daaaaaaaaaa)

However, I still think they could have refreshed the News ident - maybe made it a little longer, more contemporary - include the strap-line etc - and still retain the signature chord arrangement at the end.

Ah well. More money available for Russell and Jonathan then I guess...

It means they always crash the jingle trying to say that mouthful. Some of the presenters will insert a few extra errrs and erms into it no doubt.

Keep it simple is what I would do.... if they're gonna insist on listing every propagating medium on Earth, it won't be long before they add the podcast and freeview and Sky and cable and any and every other way to listen, add that to the constant self advertising of what's on next and later, then there's no time for the show... Sorry I have to end that right there.

You would think ... "Radio 2 from the BBC" would cover it.

I wonder why they are required to say these things every time before the news on Radio 2 when it's not a requirement at 6 music.

Assuming this question to be serious and not rhetorical...

A station needs elements to make it familiar and to give it a consistent feel, even with very different presenters. From Dawn Patrol to Drivetime, from The Music Goes Round to The Organist Entertains, all the presenters say essentially the same thing. It helps tie the disparate components into a single entity. It's part of the Radio 2 "feel".

Actually, I nearly typed "look and feel", but only half of that was appropriate for a radio station.

And since the station has to be identified "on air" at regular intervals, it's a practical strap, too.

Yes, it does sound like a defunct digital television company...

Why do they bother at all? Why not just say "Radio 2"? In fact, why use the word "Radio" at all - it's a bit old-hat these days, much like the word "Wireless" is. "BBC Audio 2" perhaps?

They're trying to play down any mention of FM as we begin the process of moving over to digital-only playforms. As more and more people listen via online distribution (even if, for most of BBC Radio, that means the appalling Real Media streaming) via web, cable, satellite and podcasting, there's less need to refer to FM frequencies. They'll be freed up someday soon anyhow.

They're just feverishly pandering to the faddish technological blips on the Broadcasting Horizon. Trying to look(sound) trendy is a sure sign of panic and a lack of management-confidence in the core product. The bottom line is that it's a RADIO station and always will be. The new strap line is the street-cred equivalent of your dad joining in at the school disco.... Confused

The problem with likes of Alex Lester he says 88291.

I suppose they will add a voice over soon to the beginning of the news jingle?

What ever for Mark?

Why they couldn't leave alone I don't know.

Yesterday(?) they were giving temperatures for at least 5 towns in the UK at the end of the weather. Talk about being messy.

I think the use of the words "digital" and "online" are daft as well. Isn't online dissemination "digital?

Dear Mark

Thank you for your recent e-mail and apologies for the delay in replying.
You're right, some presenters (e.g. Wogan) play the jingle whilst reading the 'strapline' - but there are others who fire the jingle afterwards.

I think it may be a tad early to be making any dramatic changes to the jingles; the presenters are only just getting used to the form of words.

We shall keep a watching brief, though. And thank you for at least being interested.

Best wishes

I think that the 'digital' may refer to the freeview/sat/cable route.
