Michael Fish's infamous weather forecast 20 years ago today, in which he seemed to scotch rumours of a hurricane, has gone down in broadcasting history. There's only one problem - that wasn't what happened, as he tells BBC News' Mark Kinver.

Methinks he doth protest too much.

He has, presumably, been able to give after-dinner speeches and dine out on this one claim to fame over the years.

Seeing it all back makes me nostalgic for the clear weather maps that you could understand and didn't make you go dizzy.

I think nobody has been willing to listen until now. Unfortunately the BBC didnt keep a tape of the broadcasts from the actual day so it cant be proved either way.

Only if he had been paid £1 for every time the clip had been shown/played. Did you notice the full version of the clip was played at the start of Michael Fish's interview with Stuart Maconie, not the usual 'cut off' version?

I was hoping Stuart Maconie would follow Michael Fish's interview with Neil Young's Like A Hurricane!

He did play Teddy Bear (Elvis Presley) following the interview with Gyles Brandreth on the Saturday show. Brandreth collects teddy bears and was incredibly pedantic about the Rupert stories. 'He's not a bear - he's a boy with a bear's head!' he says.

Wasn't that an Extraordinary People episode on Channel 5?

Unfortunately for him it will go with him to his grave, they will probably even shown it when the dear fellow pops off. Rolling Eyes

On the TV doc at the moment Iain McCaskill is admitting he got his late evening forecast wrong on the night at 9.25pm. They did issue gale warnings later but everybody was in bed by then.

If you watched the doc you will have seen a clip where Michael Buerk really got stuck into Ian McCaskill about not forecasting the storm. McCaskill says that he hates Buerk intensely to this day. I think if he was not on tv he might not have been as polite. Laughing

I seem to remember that kind of aggressive interviewing technique being the norm at that time. I have a book called The Great British Obsession by another famous 1980s TV weather man, Francis Wilson. In the chapter 'A History of the British Storm', of course the 1987 storm is featured, including a small transcript of the Buerk/McCaskill interview (or should that have been interrogation) Whilst I do recall that storm, I'll remember even better the one that followed it a few years later; the one the media have chosen to forget; The 'Burns Day' storm of January 1990. I was out in the teeth of that one, and the stormy month that followed it.

Why do we only get the 10 second clip about 'don't worry', which he now is claiming is about Florida ? Confused

All very fishy !!

In another weather book of mine, Weather Wise by Philip Eden, it gives the most likely reason as 'because the next line spoils the fun'. Did you hear that next line on the Drivetime show when Michael Fish was the guest? It goes something like 'But having said that, it is going to become very windy'. With the benefit of hind sight, that does seem something of an under statement though!

Thinking back I seem to remember him starting the forecast answering a question about there having been a hurricane in Florida and was it coming our way (UK) because that what she (the questioner) had heard...but maybe my memory isn't what it was Rolling Eyes

The full broadcast seems to be missing so all we ever hear of it is this short clip. Very suspicious.

We'll have to buy his book to find the 'true' story Wink
