The Dauly Telegraph reports that the Pacts group wants to see 20mph as the default speed in towns and cities.

What a ludicrous idea. The existing limits, usually 30mph, are widely ignored. Nobody will comply with a 20 limit, which will mean more parking tickets, more diversion of police from their true job amd more resentment all round--but also more income for government, which is no doubt the real reason for this.

As camera campaigner Paul Smith says, we need to improve drving standards by enhancing education.

What do others think?

Haven't you heard of speed-parking? It's all the fashion at the moment. Laughing

You're right, of course, Ian. (Nearly) everybody ignores the present 30mph limit, which is why councils have installed so many suspension-damaging (even at slow speeds) humps. Getting rid of those and implementing monitored 20mph limits on strictly residential through roads is not a bad idea in theory, but the bone of contention will be the definition of residential, and who's going to pay for it all.

Ah, the E word again. Judging by the number of drivers who try to get into our boot as we poodle along observing the 30 limit, or the constant flow past our right hand side on the motorway at 70 (except through the actively-managed section of the M42 around Solihull) no amount of education will deter the overwhelming majority for whom ignoring the stated limit is in-bred culture, if not their duty. Hitting their pocket and licence might, though.

For :I think where Schools are they should have lower speed limits.

Against : If everyone would do it then it will help. Also it can cause more risks on the roads if people drive to slow.

No, indeed. I meant speeding fines, of course. A senior moment!

Most of the road near schools in Hull have 20 mph limits as do certain residential areas, However they are spaced such that the buses can ignore them. Rolling Eyes

IIRC Aberdeen already practices a 20 mph speed limit within the city which apparently has reduced the number of road injuries in the areas in which it has been applied. But enforcement is an issue. But then again its an issue with every law.

There are two types of "Twenty's Plenty" in force at the moment - the green-circled 20 signs (which are advisory) and the red-circled 20 signs (which are of course mandatory). The first can be ignored - both are, usually.
