The town of Whitehaven in Cumbria is hours away from being the first area in the UK to begin the official switchover from analogue to digital TV.
BBC Two will be first to go in the early hours of Wednesday morning. The remaining analogue channels will be switched off on 14 November.

Why Whitehaven?
Because it is surrounded by hills on 3 sides and the sea on the 4th side. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

My mate lives in Whitehaven and has bought himself a MASSIVE flat-screen telly for the switchover (after saying he wouldn't). |

Why? The switchover is only to a digital distribution platform, not HD. Having a large flat panel display won't necessarily be of benefit, after all the transmissions are still lowly standard definition and the larger the display the worse much of the output looks. It's better to wait for more HD channel output before investing on large-screen displays if all that you're doing is watching SD telly (or DVDs). |

Why Whitehaven?
Why Whitehaven first?
According to Digital UK: "The Whitehaven area was chosen to lead the switchover process following a feasibility study led by Digital UK. Whitehaven was chosen because:
It is an area of clearly-defined terrestrial television coverage with little TV signal overlap from other areas
The presence of three different transmitters (Whitehaven, Gosforth, Eskdale Green) make it suitable technically
Research shows that people in the region have the UK's highest levels of awareness and understanding of switchover
The area has a good mix of households spanning rural and urban areas. |
