A review of ITV phone-ins has identified a "serious cultural failure" within the company.

Shows including Ant and Dec's Gameshow Marathon and Saturday Night Takeaway were among those involved, an audit of ITV's output has found.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7036316.stm

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This will blow over. You got to get the viewers back on side, but I sure we all will as some are so blown away by the shows so will carry on watching? Shocked

All the SMS and Red Button service is going to stop on live shows and bring the phone in competitions in house.

Micheal Grade will sort the corporation out.

It is deception and fraud. Michael Grade said " he wouldn't have got to bottom of this if he was on a witch hunt" I think there is more than meets the eye.

Ant & Dec said they don't get involved with what happens in the gallery Shocked

So I suppose if anyone who works for TV and sees anything out of order, phone 999, dont go to the boss? Laughing

I think he was trying to avid what happened at the BBC where people came forward in good faith and then found themselves part of a disciplinary process that lead in some cases to their firing.

It is a difficult one. Do you offer an amnesty for people to come forward or do you apply the disciplinary process from the off. I think what annoyed managers at the BBC was that they offered people a chance to come forward and they didnt and things subsequently came out which tarnished the Beeb's image.

"Do you offer an amnesty for people to come forward "

why, it appears to be fraud and deception doesn't it ?

I don't know why they can't give the money back they billed the callers so why can't they refund ? Confused

I'm not sure they hold all the caller record id's. Some would show as number withheld. And how would you administer it. ITV would have to get the customer details from the telephone companies to find out who owned the number. Dont think you want to give your personal details to them after reading this report! On several morning TV programmes that have 'competitions' they will hold up a hat with about a dozen pieces of paper in and pick one out as the winner. Therefore the presumably thousands of other entries are excluded. I never believed it was on the level, and so never wasted time and money entering these 'competitions.'

Somehow they managed to charge you via your phone bill (if you are sad enough to vote) and give a cut to ITV but then no-one knows who they charged ?. If they can get a charge on your bill then surely they can get a refund on your bill Confused

But you have to claim it, not all did apparently when gmtv did similar. It should be automatic.

Not quite correct. Your network eg. BT charged you say £1. Your network then shared some of the revenue they earned with ITV eg. 50% of £1 or 50p.

So the phone networks also made a tidy profit out of this (but have been curiously silent). ITV are offering to refund gross eg. the £1 in the example above (which would include the phone companies cut). To refund customers directly would require the telephone companies action. ITV have no direct link in the chain with the callers from a billing perspective.

Well they should pay the phone companies to sort it out if they need to, and get them to pay their money back, they know who they took money off for this scam, rather than expect the caller to make a claim. Evil or Very Mad

That would certainly be one option. Again its not foolproof. What if you use a pay as you go phone? Or have since changed operator? The logistics of this in practice are huge.

How does Ant & Dec offering part of their profits of the next series to charity resolve the issue of the telephone callers being conned out of £8m ? Confused

well according to NoTW they are leaving for America because Michael Grade upset them by saying they were only given a "vanity credit" as executive producers. Which means of course that they have now talked their way into being held responsible for the phone-in irregularities.

Seems like their egos are bigger than their brains.

They are up for entertainers of the year at the National Television Awards next week. I think its a public vote. We will see if the public still love them.

It'll wash over. They're currently ITV's biggest ratings draw (or, as Michael Grade described them, "cash cow") and in its current dire situation the network will do its best to retain them.

I wondered how much of the phone money went on that self-indulgent vanity project Fiona Phillips had on last week's GMTV where she went via Virgin Airlines to Tanzania to see her sponsored child?

You'd never see her going over to, say, Birmingham to finance a small rock radio station, or a cancer hospital in Leeds! This was like a glorified Children In Need insert.

Nothing as Virgin Airlines paid for it all.
