Dermot Murnaghan has become the latest high profile departure from BBC news, signing a deal to join Sky News in the new year.

Murnaghan, currently the face of BBC breakfast news, will host Sky News Today on weekdays between 9am and 1pm, starting from January 1.

He will also anchor the reporting of some set-piece events for the channel. Murnaghan's departure comes as his former BBC breakfast co-host, Natasha Kaplinksy, jumps ship to Five news.

His salary at Sky is likely to fall short of her £1m-a-year deal, however.

Murnaghan's 20-year broadcast news career has involved stints at Channel 4 News and the ITV News national flagship shows.

He has spent five years as host of BBC Breakfast and was an occasional host of the BBC1 bulletins at 6pm and 10pm.

In 1999, Murnaghan won a Royal Televison Society award for an interview he did with Peter Mandelson before the Labour MP's resignation from the cabinet.

"Dermot is, without doubt, one of the best broadcasters in Britain," said the head of Sky News, John Ryley.

"Sky News is all about delivering up-to-the-minute, insightful news in an innovative way and Dermot is a first-class interviewer who handles breaking news and anchors set piece events effortlessly and intelligently," Mr Ryley added. Murnaghan said: "I have always admired Sky News as a forward-thinking, credible news organisation and am looking forward to the challenges ahead with them. I look back proudly and fondly at the five years on BBC breakfast and wish the team there all the best in the future."

I'm pleased he and that Natash Kaplinsky woman are leaving the BBC. I don't watch Sky News or Five, so I won't see their horrible mugs anymore!

Judith Keppel got on my wires - 'I won Million-AIRE'. She's like the poshos' Kelly Osbourne in that she rides on the family's coat-tails!

I was always hoping CJ would say 'I didn't get where I am today without wearing an Alice band!'

Have they announced yet who will be replacing Dermot on the BBC breakfast news.

I must say I'm not sorry he is leaving-I don't find him a particular "warm/sincere" person.
