I think it's a fuss about nothing. After all, it probably helps them to drive better. I reckon that this is another bit of propaganda stirred up by our Dave to discredit NL after the sale of BAA to the Spaniards. |

Ok if you feel so strongly, you should ask for this guy to fly YOUR plane next time.
Best of luck! _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Apparently he was a standby pilot. The whole crew needed to be changed too. |

I still think it's a fuss about nothing. A little tipple of sherry isn't going to do anybody any harm. Anyhow, I thought these things flew by wire these days? |

Thats a popular myth. Yes there is an autopilot, but who inputs the co-ordinates. If the inputer is over the limit, he is more likely to make a mistake. Also he will be slower to react to an emergency.
I still think you should volunteer to sit up from with the guy flying the plane, just to prove to the rest of us, that we are worrying unduely. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I have sat up front. I even managed to get the optics to work on a flight to Miami - no man feat when you've got turbulence (I blame the curry the night before). |

A few years back, I was talking with a pilot working for American Airlines.
I asked him if the typical film scenario of an untrained civilian being able to land a Jumbo was possible.
He said it was.
just thought I'd mention it.. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

of course they can land it. Into a mountain, the sea, a city, perhaps, but yes a civilian can land a plane. It will even land itself once the fuel runs out.
The Cypriot aircrash over Greece is proof that even a civilian with flying experience cant land a commercial aircraft. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Apparently, Airbuses can now take off and land "by wire" - taking their signals remotely via air traffic control computers if necessary. Recently, I flew out to Athens on an A321 and after we landed (rather than before!) the number 1 officer told us that we landed on autopilot. Had he been tippling the ol' sherry, I wonder? I could do that job! |
