A Commons Select Committee wants easier access to abortion, including no further need for two medics to sign and possibly--we're told--delegation of form signing to senior nurses and do-it-yourself abortion at home.
Two members of the Committee are said to be furious and have issued a minority report.
But as there were apparently some 200,000 abortions last year, why is easier access needed at all?

Exactly - appears to be easy enough as it is.
The worrying proposal is the delegation of the actual abortion surgery to nurses and midwives. As if there's plenty of them and they haven't got enough to do already.
The minority are miffed because the time limit has not been reduced. While I understand the feelings behind this I think it's too late to do anything about it now as it would only encourage women to take the risk of using "unofficial" practitioners, or going abroad, or end up having even more (largely unwanted) children that the welfare state will no doubt have to support. _________________ Ron |
