A senior police officer in charge of road policy for Britain's chief constables is facing prosecution for exceeding a 60mph speed limit.
Meredydd Hughes, chief constable of the South Yorkshire force, was allegedly clocked by cameras driving along the A5 near Chirk in north Wales.

He wasn't testing a high performance police car I'm sure someone from the force will drive him around or he will have to do some exta walking. |

I noticed they don't mention what speed he was doing but it must have been high because of the fine?
I wouldn't know about these things as I've never been done for speeding..... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

It's usually a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence. If he's going to be baned then he must have been going at some speed.
The fastest cop in Yorkshire. |

I think he should be baned, deferably. |

Yes, but the text mentions up to a £1000 fine and maybe a ban.
It makes a difference though. If he was doing 65mph, well we all do it don't we? but if was say 80, then he deserves the publicity. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

He was doing about 90mph--I can't remember the precise figure.
You would think that someone in his position would resign in the eye of such a blatant case of don't do as I do, do as I say. But no one seems to resign for anything today.
I love the irony of his being caught on Mr Brunstrom's patch.

The guidelines from the Association of Chief Police Officers are that for a 60mph limit a summons be issued for speeds above 86mph.
Will make a nice variation on the old "Who do you think you are, Stirling Moss?" line. _________________ Ron |

Hughes' employers' statement says the alleged offence was "in the early morning of a Bank Holiday Monday in May" .
Presumably they've used those words in an attempt to quietly underline that it was a time of empty roads, light traffic etc and nice spring weather.
The subtext of this being that it's ok to boot it a bit when the conditions are right.
Which I think is a very sensible message! When the conditions are right! (takes cover and waits for heckling!)
Unfortunately, eejits like Mr Hughes and the rest of the Traffic Taleban have devoted vast energy and time to trying to persuade us all that any slight exceeding of the posted limit is always dangerous, no matter what the circumstances, and must always be punished. No excuses, no discretion.
The biter bit. Oh dear, how sad. |
