5 weeks ago I resigned from my job after 24 years service. I have a new job lined up from Jan 08.
On resigning my employer immediately put me on 3 months gardening leave.
Having just returned from a 5 week holiday down under I am now thinking what should I do with myself for the next 2 months starting tomorrow.
NB-Please do not suggest listening to weekday Radio 2 -I could not think of anything worse. |

Mark,
I was made redundant 18 months ago (after 30 years service). The redundancy money was good so no financial worries. In fact that money was so good that any other earnings that year would have been taxed at 40% so I decided not to bother earning anything till April 2007.
My situation was different, no other job lined up, in fact with my wife still working I could have semi-retired for longer but I decided to go self-employed as a consultant and completed a short college course to help with that (had to resit one exam, I'm a bit old for exams The business is now doing well, don't need many customers, not many overheads, I'm sticking to three days a week (otherwise that 40% tax will kick in again).
So, although our situations are a bit different I suggest see what local colleges offer, any short course in something that interests you or maybe something that might assist in your future plans.

Thanks very much John-some very sound advice here.
Interestingly enough over Sunday lunch today my wife asked me the question "So what are you going to be doing for the next 2 months while I'm at work then".
Having now studied our local College's short term courses brochure I am planning to sign up for an IT advance course, plan to sign up for a 6 month course to learn Spanish course-(2 nights a week) and am going to see if I can get my life saving badges. Some years ago I went on a course for these but never took the final exams. Interestingly enough having seen first hand the work of life savers whilst in Australia this past month on some of their great surfing beaches I have an appetite to try and get the basic badges. Indeed this course should help me get fitter if nothing else! |

The UK beaches in Nov / Dec don't quite have the same appeal, I would guess
Good Luck. |

I think that might have been one of those rhetorical questions Mark. The subscripted answer is "well, the housework and shopping of course dear".

Very true Minx. When I was at home 'doing nothing' for 10 months or so I somehow became the resident person on the ironing board, and still am!
But I only do it in the lounge, and when either my music is on, or football is on |

Absolutely spot on Minx.
My wife has already advised
I expect you to drive me to the local train station in the morning
I expect you to pick me up of an evening from same said local station
I expect you to prepare/cook the evening meal.
I expect you to take over the washing, ironing , shopping, housework duties.
Quite when I am going to find time for myself is going to be a challenge I suspect but I do plan to do the things I listed earlier in this thread (somehow). |

In addition to my to do list I'm gonna try and see if I can fix up a beer/coffee with Richard Allinson. |
