|

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Radiohead let its fans decide how much to pay for a digital copy of the band's latest release, "In Rainbows," and more than half of those who downloaded the album chose to pay nothing, according to a study by a consumer research firm.
Some 62 percent of the people who downloaded "In Rainbows" in a four- week period last month opted not to pay the British alt-rockers a cent. But the remaining 38 percent voluntarily paid an average of $6, according to the study by comScore Inc.
Radiohead broke with its past practice of releasing its music in CD format and through a major record label when it released its seventh studio album online itself. The biggest wrinkle was the band's decision to let fans pay as much or as little as they wanted to download a copy.

This goes one step beyond giving the CD away with the weekend newspapers. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

The thing missing from that report is how many actually downloaded - if that 38% is roughly the same number of people who'd buy an actual Radiohead CD in the shops then it's no big deal.
The other 62% may have just taken the opportunity to get a legal free download - and, who knows, may actually go and pay for more stuff by the band. |

Between Oct. 1 and Oct. 29, about 1.2 million people visited the Web site the band set up for fans to download the album, comScore said Monday. The research firm did not say how many people in its study actually bought the album. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I think what this shows is that thanks to the internet people do think that they have a right to get anything they want for free, what worries me is how do young up coming bands get them selves out there without giving their materiel away on myspace and so on? |

Or it could mean people heard it and decided it wasn't worth paying for.

Indeed. But I would know that before downloading.
Any why download something just because it is free? _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Because all the hype may have suggested it was something special, worth getting. And because many people on the internet do seem to think all things should be free. |

Why not? That's just what most Podcast subscribers do - and if you don't like what you hear you simply delete it. Nothing lost. |
