Today I have ordered a triple Frank Sinatra CD collection and a Best of Tom T Hall (the country singer/songwriter if you don't know him.) I am waiting for other albums to arrive by Dwight Yoakam and Johnny Paycheck. I saw on Amazon today a CD I that I too have was been offered for sale for £159 (!), so I am tempted to undercut that price and get some cash for Christmas! The rarity of the record is no guarantee of quality though is it? Rolling Eyes

Brian, what's the name of the set -and does have "Sunny Side of The Street" on it? I need to find it for use on a video that I'm editing for my father. It's one of his favourite songs.

Hello Fred. This set is 'The Platinum Collection' on Capitol, but SSotS isn't included here. It is on another 3 CD set 'The Capitol Years' though, as well as various other Sinatra albums. I'll check and see if I can find one on Amazon or the AMG later for you.

Hello Fred. I found a CD called 'On the sunny side of the street' by Frank, Dean and Sammy on Amazon, and that song is the first track. You can buy the CD for 1p (!)plus P&P. Go to 'Music' and type in that song title and see the selection. Hope this helps. Not a Rat Pack version according to the review.

My two Dwight Yoakam albums have arrived! The tribute to Buck Owens is fab with fifteen tracks, some done faithfully to Buck's versions and others with very different arrangements. Lots of good photos of Dwight and his hero Buck, too! I haven't played the other Dwight album yet today.

The Johnny Paycheck album is two and a half LPs onto one CD. The 'half' is the second installment of the LP he made with Merle Haggard. Great value if you are a Country fan! The Australian label 'Raven' does some great re-issues, rather like 'Ace' in the UK or 'Bear Family' in Germany.

Breathe by Moses Kitchen. This is a band who were playing at a local boozer and were great. They had some CDs on sale.

I'd be interested to hear, as well. Comment on Amazon seems to suggest the overwhelming influence is the dreamy Alison Krauss, who I like in small doses, but she is a bit of a one-trick pony.

My recent purchases include the Eagles, who sound exactly like they did twenty-odd years ago, James Hunter's "People Gonna Talk", which HMV had filed under Jazz but who actually sounds uncannily like Sam Cooke, ace blues guitarist Robben Ford's "Truth", which is workmanlike and not as overtly commercial as the previous "Keep On Running" (and therefore a little underwhelming), and the gorgeous (voice of) Clare Teal, who with "Paradisi Carousel" has put her jazz tonsils to one side and delivered an easy listening selection par excellence.

I must take you to task, one trick pony, this lady has the voice of an angel, plays a really mean fiddle, has had many hits both as a solo artist and with the excellent Union Station. She won an EMMY award in 1994 for When You Say Nothing At All, which copy cat Keating did a mirror image of. Perhaps if you listened to some of her albums with tracks like Ghost In This House, Dreaming My Dreams With You, & When God Dips His Pen of Love In My Heart you could appreciate that this is one very talented singer & fiddle player.
Raising Sand has some excellent tracks and some not so good tracks, I must admit that although I like both artists I was very sceptical, however, a good album, but not the best I have bought recently; that has to go to Kendel Carson - Rearview Mirror Tears.

Recent albums bought in the last few weeks:

Utah Carol - Comfort For The Traveller
Claire Holley - Dandelion
Kendall Payne - Jordan's Sister
Mary Karlzen - Yelling At Mary
Abraham - On The Surface
Lisa Redford - Slipstream
Stephanie Kirkham - That Girl
Dana Glover - Testimony
Carol Laula - First Disciple

Haven't got around to buying the Eagles' new album - but then again there's around 400 albums on my Amazon wish list at the moment. Was buying four a week up until last week.

Taking a break from buying albums until Christmas for now (unless Gemma Hayes releases her eagerly anticipated third one before then!) - catching up on book purchases between now and the turn of the year.

Perhaps one-trick-pony was a bit harsh, but a lot of what I've heard, other than the Now That I've Found You collection, is very sombre. So is there one album that shows off her voice and playing and has a good mix of moods.

I've got Kendel Carson's, it is good. Also forgot to mention Alison Moyet's new one, which is a little bland musically, but vocally and lyrically she's in fine fettle.

Hearing a little snippet of Mark & Stuart the other night, I had to stop and listen to Tom Waits' "The Piano's been Drinking" which I've never heard before.
I really liked his "Nighthawks at the Diner" LP back in the 70's so I got onto Ebay straight away and bought 3 CDs
"Small Change", "Rain Dogs" and "Heart Attack & Vine"
All for just under £15 including postage Razz

I just feel like hearing his drawl sometimes...

I've just bought two Johnny Cash CD albums 'Best of' and 'Ballads of the true West.' The first CD goes from his Sun Records days up to his versions of the Springsteen songs 'Highway Patrolman' and 'Johnny 99.' The second one is an 'enhanced' album with more tracks on than the original LP. One of the early 'concept' albums from Johnny with narrations linking the songs. I remembered it when I heard the Tom Russell series of programmes about Cowboys on Radio 2. Pass me my Stetson! Laughing

Does transferring vinyl onto CD count or do I need to start a new thread? Confused

Anyway this week transferred :-

Sleepwalker - Kinks
Wind Beneath My Wings - Lee Greenwood

Ron in answer to your question about Alison Krauss, Now That I've Found You is the one I play the most, I do also enjoy So Long So Wrong (with Union Station) and Forget About It (solo).

Susan Hedges - Crimson Love On Velvet Black
Released on Goldrush (Gold CD 005/6)
www.goldrushrecords.co.uk
email sales@goldrushrecords.co.uk

This was bought for me by a friend who went to see this young lady at a music weekend, don't know anything about her, am just listening to CD1 of the 2 CD set, all her own songs, well co - written with Paula Wright and Gary Hall. It's, well, country rock come folk rock, I am really enjoying it. My favourite track from CD1, so far, is Jerusalem Syndrome. The 2nd disc is all covers of other people's songs, some names I definitely know and like ie Townes Van Zandt, Sandy Denny and Tom Waites. Think she would be a good candidate to do a live session on Bob's Saturday show, has a great backing band with accoustic & electric guitars, bass, violin, harpsicord, saxaphone, piano & drums; I prefer it to Raising Sand.

Hi Biker. Susan Hedges is a Liverpool girl who I've seen and heard many times. Once at Radio Merseyside she traded rock'n'roll piano solos with Linda Gail Lewis, sister of Jerry Lee. She is also blind, and Alan Bleasdale is a big fan of hers.

Thanks for the info Briant, I am really impressed with this 2 CD set and all Diana said to me was "thought you might like this, then you can eat your heart out as I told you to come to Llandudno with me". Well I guess she is right Crying or Very sad I like Linda Gail Lewis, the only recording I have of hers is the duet album, You Win Again, with Van the man. Have just been and looked at Susan's website, I think I will be buying her other CDs.

I had a couple of CD's bought me by a friend while she was recently visiting Canada, not albums I would have bought myself, but they are excellent.
Soundtrack, O Brother Where Art Thou? and Bluegrass Allstars. I have managed to fit all but 3 tracks onto 1 CD and I can't stop playing it in the car. Some of the tracks date back to the late 20's and mid 30's, some from 1999/2000, funny how you come across some excellent music. Very Happy

Tom Pacheco's 'Woodstock Winter', with members of The Band playing on many of the songs. Tom is another of the Dylan types that I enjoy listening to. 'Eagle in the rain' was the first album I bought by him. 'Robert and Ramona' is a Bonnie and Clyde type story and 'Jesus in a leather jacket' is another favourite of mine.
'The Essential John Denver' with all the familiar songs plus lesser known items like-'Dreamland Express', 'Wild Montana Skies' (with Emmylou Harris), 'Some days are diamonds, some days are stone' etc.
I am waiting for 'Martin Mull and his Fabulous Furniture' to arrive from the USA. No, that's the album title! Laughing John Peel was a fan and once played 'Straight talk about the blues' for me on Radio 1. A great skit on the venerable black bluesmen and their white acolytes!

Yes indeed, the more I play it the more I like it, as I was not too sure, other than 3 or 4 excellent tracks, when I first bought it. We managed to get tickets for the Wembley Arena gig as well. Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Taking advantage of the sales I've bought the latest albums from Crowded House and Bon Jovi, the latter being an absurd attempt, by duetting with Big & Rich and Leann Rimes, to corner the country market in the US. Despite this it's full of catchy licks and hooks, shuffles and boogies.

Also in the bargain bins: The Best of Dan Fogelberg, slightly surprising, since the death of an artist is usually the excuse for them to try and shift product at full price.

Tony Bennett's Duets album. His voice isn't what it was, but with friends like k d lang and Barbra Streisand to help out you don't really notice.

Creedence Clearwater Revival's Chronicles Vol 2. The best of what weren't hits, which means straying off into a funkier, jazzier groove on a few tracks. They were one hot, tight outfit.

And two new releases that tempted my wallet further out:-

Emily Maguire's Keep Walking. Singer/songwriter on the folksy side of pop, with thoughtful lyrics of a folksy/spiritual nature, produced and accompanied by hubby Christian Dunham. She played the Cambridge Folk Festival last summer and Aled Jones has played some of this on a Sunday morning. Quite good.

Finally, for a laugh, and for listening in small doses, the Red Hot Chilli Pipers' Bagrock To The Masses, a mixture of trad-influenced bagpipe tunes and reels and some of rock's cheesiest anthems (Smoke on The Water, Voodoo Child, We Will Rock You) played on the pipes and backed with an unsubtle heavy rock beat and rhythm. A Scottish Hayseed Dixie, if you like!
