Making the admittedly rather sweeping assumption that the Beatles might be the favourite Liverpool group of the masses as a whole, who's next?

For me the Searchers would have a pretty strong claim.

It was great to hear them having a good early-morning airing on R2 over the weekend, with Take Me for What I'm Worth on SOTS and Four Strong Winds on GMS.

Which Scousers would get your vote?

Ian.

My mind's a blank this morning, and I can't think of that many apart from The Beatles and the other members of the Epstein harem, and the Searchers, who came from Liverpool.

Echo and the Bunnymen, I suppose, but they don't stand out in my mind as a great.

The place is famous for its rich production line of comedians, among whom Stan Boardman and Jimmy Tarbuck are very funny and at one time or another had a go at putting singing voice to vinyl, with shocking results! Pride of place, though, and my nomination for the No 2 favourite Liverpudlian act behind the Fabs, goes to Ken Dodd, who did have a fine singing voice (still does, but he's getting on a bit now) and is still able to make an audience rip with laughter, even with an act that has changed little over 40-odd years.

I always like The Searchers too. I thought Tony Jackson had a very melodic voice. Others of the period I saw and enjoyed were Gerry and The Pacemakers, The Merseybeats, The Undertakers, The Big Three, The Fourmost and The Swinging Blue Jeans.
Later I went over to Country Music, and The Hillsiders were the best band in Liverpool for me. Then in the Eighties it was The Teardrop Explodes, Frankie goes to Hollywood, Echo and The Bunnymen etc.

There's always The Spinners, of course.

I get the feeling that they fall into the "best kept forgotten" category by the folk purists, but they certainly kept traditional, acoustic folk music going in the public conscience, and on the television, and to packed theatre and concert hall audiences in the 1970s and early 80s, and I liked them.

My mum liked Ken Dodd - he had a song called 'Tatty Bye' out years ago, where I was convinced the chorus was 'Patti Boyd!'

I liked the Icicle Works in the 80's/90's - their Best of CD is excellent though they didn't really have that many hits.
