Haven't posted anything re light music for a while so here goes...
On Friday 21 December it'll be the 50th anniversary of the death of Eric Coates. R3 is marking the occasion by including him as Composer of the Week. My spies also tell me that David Mellor will be presenting a special on Classic FM from 12noon to 2pm on Sun 9 Dec. Is R2 (to my mind, his natural home) doing anything to commemorate this anniversary?
Next year is the centenary of the birth of American light music composer Leroy Anderson. If you're at all into this type of music, you'll know a good number of his tunes--the Belle of the Ball, Forgotten Dreams, the Blue Tango, plus many. I do hope that the anniversary prompts some new interest in his work. You can get a 21-track collection of the most popular items, with one or two lesser-known ones, on Naxos B0000SUO8Q (so inexpensive as well as excellent). Someone whom you know very well reviewed it on the Amazon UK site way back on 13 Dec 2003!

Thanks Ian. I've just watched two versions of 'The Typewriter Song' by Leroy Anderson on the web! |

I suspect that R2 will leave it to R3, as they'll be in full and rampant Christmas mode come the 21st.
I'll bear the Leroy Anderson in mind, it looks terrific value. It's missing Clarinet Candy, but I've got Emma Johnson's brilliant version of that elsewhere. _________________ Ron |

Thanks for responses. The Typewriter, which is on the CD that I mentioned, will remind many of the News Quiz on R4 (signature tune).

I suspect you're right. But what a pity, when you consider that R2 marked the centenary of Coates' birth, in 1986, with a splendid four-part documentary, narrated by his son Austin.

My apologies--it looks as though my info that Eric Coates was to be Composer of the Week on R3 w/c 17 December was wrong, as RT says that it's Tchaikovsky that week. I did pass the info on in good faith from a usually impeccable source. I wonder if there was a last-minute change of plan. It look as though the anniversary will be completely ignored by the mainstream BBC radio channels on the day itself (there's a surprise).
At least CFM did their EC special yesterday. I tried to hear this on their new Listen Again feature but it cut out after about 30 minutes and the only way I can see to get it back is start again. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

Yes that is very annoying. I suspect that the lack of a forward button is to stop people fast forwarding the ads but it should at least have the option to resume at the same point at which you left off listening. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

I spoke a little too soon yesterday. I've now got the double-issue RT and Eric Coates is Composer of the Week on R3 for 24-28 December--a good cross-section of his music, too. I'll probably dip into selected items.
Perhaps R2 will put some of his music on Melodies for You--I hope so.
