Kate Silverton is to present the BBC's new 2000GMT news bulletin, the corporation has announced.

The newsreader, who currently hosts on BBC Breakfast and BBC News 24, will present the 90-second update when it begins on 10 December.

The 37-year-old will also stand in for Sophie Raworth on the One O'Clock News when she goes on maternity leave in the new year.

Silverton worked as a corporate financier before joining the media.

"I am delighted with the whole range of new challenges BBC News has offered me," Silverton said.

Media scrutiny

"It is professionally exciting to have the opportunity to work on output as diverse as Panorama, foreign reporting, factual entertainment and presenting major bulletins."

Silverton joined BBC News 24 in 2004 and in the last year has reported from Iraq, Lesotho and Los Angeles, where she covered the Oscars ceremony.

She also worked on a number of special reports for Panorama, including investigations into flood prevention and the consequences of delayed motherhood and falling birth rates in the UK.

The presenter was the subject of media scrutiny in 2005 when News 24 co-host Philip Hayton told reporters he had quit after being paired with Silverton.

"I think incompatibility sums it up and I don't think she would disagree with that," he told Media Guardian.

The BBC defended Silverton at the time, saying: "The characterisation of Kate Silverton is one that few, if any, would recognise."

How depressing. Do we really need any more "news" anyway?
I find the 60 second update on whatever channel it is just plain ridiculous along with the equally annoying Entertainment Update too.

Half asleep this morning, I heard some rubbish about "bump & park" motorists who don't leave an "it was me and here's my details" note.
The female reporter mentioned "the sound of mashing metal". How many of today's cars have metal bumpers?? ( for some reason, the clip they showed over and over and over... of a car bumping another car, like we don't know how it would look, used an old Austin A40!?! )

Then they did another ridiculous story about M&S pulling String Vests off the shelves. Some trumped up fashion expert said the String Vest isn't cool and gives an image of food spilled down the front and fat beer bellies!!

Great News programme.

Kate Silverton always reminds me of a burnt match. Laughing

It's just another thing to make News 24 seem even more pointless.

Quite amazing that she is brought in specially to read the news for 90 seconds. Quite why Huw Edwards cant do it or the Six guy is beyond me.

But nobody objects to news summaries on radio, so why not have them on TV?

I do !!!!

Why must we have so much news? Especially when a missing canoeist and his wife is the headline. The Daily Mirror have probably paid her enough so she can return the insurance money Rolling Eyes

Too much news. Look, we all have fancy mobile phones, internet, teletext, Sky channels, News24, so why DO we need news bulletins on radio and TV????

I believe it's at 9pm which I always preferred as a time for news anyway.

I don't have a problem with it as I don't watch the 6pm news, I'm still listening to the radio (not R2) and rarely watch TV until after 7pm.

No, it is at 8pm, but I fail to see why it should be someone separate from the 6 or 10 o'clock programmes. I thought they were supposed to be cutting unnecessary expenditure.

They're trying to get "younger" viewers, hence the choosing of young totty rather than the old fogies Wink doing the other slots. Which, of course, is all very silly.

Compared to Huw Edwards and Sophie Raworth... Confused

Saw it last night, as OH had been watching the travesty that passes for EastEnders these days. She doesn't even get 90 seconds, because there's a 30 opt-out for a local summary and weather (definitely NOT totty round here). Blink and you miss her Wink

I saw it on Monday as she was quite blatantly sticking her chest out! It's a news bulletin for people who find Newsround too taxing.

No objection in principle but unfortunately the local segment from round here was a bit muddled last night.

Kate used to be a regular panelist a few years back on Matthew Wright's TV programme with Henry Bonsu. Whatever happened to him? Rolling Eyes
