Elisabeth Mahoney - 1st January

Michael Ball (Radio 2), sitting in for Ken Bruce, has his own jingle. It's a bit limp, but at least he has one: you have to have sat in a few times successfully to be granted such status. Poor Liza Tarbuck, covering so splendidly for Steve Wright at the moment, has only a bog-standard, ultra-bland Radio 2 jingle to play. Fingers crossed that in 2008 she gets a regular slot, and a suitably spirited bespoke jingle, on the station.

On yesterday's show, Ball did his best to whip up some end-of-year atmosphere. His delivery fell a little flat in places - at times he sounds as if he is talking to an elderly relative who is hard of hearing - but he is great fun with guests (he called Imelda Staunton "a miserable trout" for choosing sad songs to play) and with the listeners. They phoned in with tales of bizarre and disastrous celebrations they had undertaken to see in past new years.

One woman explained how, with no invitations to parties one year, she and her husband had a pretend shindig, and dressed their dog up in a blonde wig. "We pretended to greet imaginary guests," she said, "and did lots of jumping around to make it look busy."

Sigh... Liza Tarbuck: splendid? If MediaGuardian say so, it must be true - and Dame Lesley will hire her despite her being pretty poor.

Just goes to prove that Guardian journalists know absolutely nothing about anything Shocked

Actually...that applies to most journalists to be honest

Michael Balls jingle is made by Wise Buddah Productions who produces the Johnnie Walker Sunday show. Michael was covering for the show whilst Johnnie was way last year. This is why a one was specially made for him. Liza works under the Steve Wright heading, but did or does she need her own jingle?

It's been appalling - and I like her in other things. I never realised it could be quite so difficult to "drive the desk" with all the wrong buttons etc, and frankly her style was irritatingly twee, with false accents, all this "wun" and "mister" and god knows what. I dislike Chris Evans but even he hasn't driven me to finding an alternative. Liza has, and that's sad, because it's quite a big slot to fill and she's not the one to do it. Crying or Very sad

It only took him 15 years, to get his own jingle from radio 2 Wink Very Happy

Not a big fan of Michael Ball as a DJ, the guy should stick to what he's good at, ie singing.

Liza Tarbuck was okay-ish and slowly improved (a bit), but she is much better as a sidekick to Mark Radcliffe.

I thought he had a jingle made for his own show, and that's why there's one ready for whenever he sits in for others?
