We are here (for a week) in Bronx and the news is all James Brown. His chauffeur drove the coffin up from Georgia on Thursday night to lie in view at the Apollo Theatre, Harlem. Streets were blocked and subway stations around 125th St were packed as people tried to get near the Apollo. We opted for a quiet day with friends in Long Island.
Apparently the chauffeur is now driving the coffin back to Georgia, I think it's about 800 miles south.
I said to my brother-in-law that I expect the deaths of James Brown and Gerald Ford this week will have taken Iraq off the USTV news headlines. He said it doesn't take much to take Iraq off the headlines here. He reckons George Bush, Iraq and Afghanistan appear on UK TV 10 times as often as they do on US.
