We're spending a few days at the missus' sister's house in Bronx NY. Been here many times and always been impressed with the range of music accessible. Though there is nothing to compare with Radio 2 there is something for everyone if you know where to look.

Scrolling though the FM frequencies on a car radio reveals just about every music genre so indoors I did the same with a radio-alarm clock and made these notes:

WFUV - 90.7 - this is a specialist radio station featuring much that R2 does in the evenings and weekends and I've heard an R3-worthy show about pianists and a world music show about Spanish-American music. On Sundays there's a 3 hour bigband show. The station is broadcast from Fordham Uni which is just down the road from where I am now.

WNYC - 93.9 - an arts and light classics station, better than Classic FM in presentation

WQXR - 96.3 - serious classical listeners station, close to R3 in style

WAXQ - classic rock with a lot of British music - Led Zep, Elton John, Queen etc

JAKFM - 101.1 - what they call 'arena' rock, big stuff like Bon Jovi, U2, AC/DC etc

106.7 - 1980's music but mainly American

Z100FM - hit station. But I don't know many of the hits

In between most of these stations are hip hop stations grinding out the current Snoop Dogg etc. Bronx/Harlem was the birth of hip hop wasn't it?

Anyway, looking forward to old R2 next week, I don't have time to use Listen Again this week Crying or Very sad

Very interesting John, I heard a lot of radio stations just play one aritist all day and every day? There is quite a few talk radio stations, and the white house has cut back a lot of the money to fund them, because of the war on terror, and some are having to fund raise for themselves.

We are becoming like this in the UK different networks playing different music content.

Not overly familiar with NY radio as I tend to only listen to US radio in the car when I'm there [dont ever intend to drive around NYC Shocked ]

However in some other states it can be very interesting to scan the dial on a journey. I remember being in west Virgina and all I could pick up was country and religious shows Rolling Eyes plus a very bizzarre PBS station that was a bit like Radio 2 circa maybe 20 years ago.

I quite like American radio. Plenty of stations and most are buzzing with enthusiasm. I like the talk shows too, plenty of disagreements.
However, whilst driving from Los Angeles to Pheonix, I was surprised how few stations there were at times! and what stations there were, soon faded away.
Driving a convertible in San Francisco with a good rock station on - perfect.
imo of course.... Very Happy

I like the fact that they keep news on news stations and music on music stations. A revolutionary concept that the BBC will never get.

I've never come across a station in the US that just plays one artist. I'm sure there is one, somewhere, but I think its more of an urban myth that this is prevalent in the US. Try internet stations if you want that kind of thing Laughing

When I was in NYC about ten years ago, there were a variety of stations. The one I landed on was a country station I listened to alot. They had this catchphrase on thursdays, "It's thursday, which is almost friday round here.." I always remembered that! Very Happy Very Happy
Then there was some weird alternative station where they had a couple of fiddle players & singers live in the studio playing everything from old western swing to Yiddish tunes to 40s jazz! In between the tunes, they had a phone-in about the news & discussion & ramblings in the studio
Whenever one of the fiddlers got bored with the discussion, they began playing the fiddle!
I recorded that & had it on tape till a while ago!
Truly weird! Very Happy Cool

I live in Wisconsin--we have the usual top 40 type stations--way too many country stations. We have an AM radio station that plays some interesting specialty type shows on the weekend. Overall NY radio sounds more diverse. And no our radio stations don't play the same artist all day--although sometimes it seems like it after I've heard the same Pink or Pussycat Dolls song 7 million times! Mad (7 million--not an exagerration!)

Try this website to sample some of the US stations on-line:

http://www.mikesradioworld.com/namerica.html

I have WCLZ on my favourites (along with R2, 'natch). There's something for everyone there.

Laughing Well--maybe they do on the classic rock stations....I have to admit I do like him!

Oh--and I've never been to Chippewa Falls--but Wisconsin is lovely! Lots of trees and lakes. Usually at this time of year we have some beautiful snow also but thanks to this rotten global warming we've had inches of rain this week! YUK!

Hi, Good to see all these responses. There are stations in NYC devoted to just one person, Jesus Smile

I should also mention 'MusicChoice'. Not radio but a set of 40, yes 40, US cable TV channels that play non-stop muisc. Genre-specific so there's 40 types of music to choose from. Of course I went for the swing/big band, jazz and classical stations, and I wasn't disappointed because they are playing 'album tracks' from CDs and so we hear rare stuff, seldom aired material.

MusicChoice don't play a CD from beginning to end, the playlist/track order is very random. So within a particular music type you hear all sorts of artistes, bands and singers one after the other. On the TV screen appears several images/photos, and several pieces of informative text, so you can use MusicChoice as a radio and do other stuff or as happened to me just watch the TV, find out who this 'new' band are playing an unfamiliar track - turns out to be a very old band I've never heard (e.g. Larry Clinton?) and read about the band.

My nephews here do the same on the several Rap/HipHop stations at MusicChoice.

So it's like Radio 2 without the presenters, and that has it's attractions Very Happy

As the gentleman & scholar posted here earlier "it's "just not possible" to have too many country stations!
Trawling along on my DAB it is entirely possible, on the other hand, to have too many top 40 pop stations Rolling Eyes

Well since it's non-stop music Scott wouldn't listen. Smile

Oh, but there is one for 1990's, it's possible he knows some music from then, and might think of listening, but I wouldn't bet on it.

Just today I had 'The Singers' channel on and rushed into the lounge when I heard Lily Allen's first single (the reggae one). I wasn't aware her record had crossed the channel. I looked at the text on the screen which talked about Thomas Edison and 78's and LP's and I realised they knew nothing about her Shocked

I did miss the first minute or so which may have said she'd had a hit in UK but I thought it odd that the text seemed to revert to some default history lesson. Hmm also missed if she used the f word on it.

I wondered that last bit because although the Rap channel is uncensored the Singers channel is often Nat King Cole and Bing etc

Hi Jane,

Heh, heh, when we lived for a time in Berea I only ever listened to a PBS classical music channel, can't remember the name. Everything else seemed to be just loud rock or country.

Happy New Year to you!

Believe me , after what I have heard on Ohio radio over the years and online when I'm in the UK, Sarah K and Terry are just wonderful! Wink

I'd settle for just one ! We can't get 3C (Continuous Cool Country) on DAB in East Lancs, the Central Lancs signal only goes as far as Warrington and then drops out ! We have a cheap Freeview box, permanantly tuned to channel 724 (3c) just jacked into the hi-fi but I wish the powers that be would give them room on more transmitters so they become national, I'd consider getting a DAB radion in the car if they went national.

John.. MisicChoice is on Sky Digital over here too, half of it's free to air and t'other half costs a fiver a month. We used to subscribe for the country channel but binned it when we got a freeview box just so we could get 3C.

Yep, can't get 3C in the London area.
There is one station in London on DAB (Easy Radio London) that plays a fair bit of contemporary country, but they mix it with pop & rock. The London station is the remnants of the old AM station Country 1035.

That station did a brief stint on Sky, it was called MeanCountry1035, the Mean Fiddler group aquired it from the previous owners (Ritz1035 ?). It was fantastic, Sid Griffin had a weekly Honky Tonk show on Thursday nights, it was brilliant. They ran CMT's Country Countdown USA too.

Yep, after that the Sunrise Radio group acquired it. They dropped the 1035AM one (now as asian music & speech station) & changed the name to Easy Radio London broadcasting on DAB and the net. It is not too bad, but not country all the way. They include most of the current country chart hits, but quite alot of pop & rock as well.
