Gordon Brown has urged MPs to limit their pay rises to keep them in line with those of public sector workers like nurses and police.

MP - £60,675
Minister of state - £100,568
Cabinet minister - £137,579
Prime minister - £188,849

So hopefully he will take a cut in pay and others will follow. Will this mean more money for other areas, like the NHS?

That's no really that much for a prime minister when you think someone like Beckham or Rooney gets £100,000 a week.
The reposnsibilty of a PM is surely greater than some prima donna kicking a bag of air around. Rolling Eyes

I don't know how a pay cut for MPs would generate more money for the NHS though Mark, it will probably just dissappear into a black hole like it normally does.

I think our soldiers who are fighting a grim way should be on as much as a Footballer?

No, I don't agree, they chose to be soliders and they know what they pay is. If they are still prepared to join the army then let them.
Being a pacifist I'm probably not the best person to comment on that though. Laughing

The thing about elected representatives is that the numbers have mushroomed with elected assemblies in Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland & London. They are never likely to say that there are too many of them, but do we need them all?

I don't see how they can accept a pay rise over and above what they expect other public sector workers to take.

Ian.

I can easily see how they'd jump at a 15% pay rise, Ian - if you're awarded that sort of cash, you'd pretty much happily ride out the criticism.

I'd like to see MPs reaction if all NHS employees were given the same pay rise, though - or are we not valued as much as, or do as important a job as, an MP? Our pay rise was less than 2% last year, remember.

After the fiasco with the fire service and the police, I believe that MPs should not have an above inflation rise, they are public sector workers and should be under the same constraints as they expect others to adhere to. Life is hard in the private sector, especially for small companies like the one I work for, cost cutting has ment we have had no pay rise in 5 years.
