TV presenter Jeremy Clarkson has lost money after publishing his bank details in his newspaper column.
The Top Gear host revealed his account numbers after rubbishing the furore over the loss of 25 million people's personal details on two computer discs.

He wanted to prove the story was a fuss about nothing.

It is great to see a loudmouth plonker get his comuppence!

The direct debit system has a money back guarantee. Since Jezza didn't set it up, he'll get his money back. A real fraudster may be able to set up a direct debit but since the fraudster would have to provide their bank details( if they wanted the money) it would be easy for the police to trace them. So only a really stupid fraudster would do that. Still a fuss about nothing and nothing to worry about. Fraudsters usually convert your bank balance into something else - Goods or Services or cash from a machine, to do that they need your card number, pin and the 3 digit security code (if they use it online). Setting up a direct debit to a charity using Jezza's details isn't something a criminal is going to be too interested in. What are they to do, ask the charity for a percentage?

If anyone really is worried. It takes only a few moments to set up a new bank account.

When the Times recently asked for nominations for great 'wits', I suggested Jeremy Clarkson because he was already half way there. Rolling Eyes

Some one once said to me, when I mentioned Jeremy Clarkson, "that two faced Yorkie". I just replied, "no he can't be two faced, or he would be wearing the other one". Wink

In the good old, bad old days, every new direct debit authority would be checked by your bank before being accepted from whatever company.

However, we are in the 21st century and, to make things easier (and cheaper) for both banks and business, there is no longer a requirement to even obtain your signature to a direct debit authority, far less than that it should be checked.

There is, however, an obligation under the direct debit scheme and guarantee that originators should properly identify and "know your customer" before claiming money from their account, which is more than simply quoting name, address and bank details.

I'm sure that Jeremy will have little difficulty in obtaining a refund of his £500 from his bank, irrespective of whether they manage to get it back from whichever company claimed it. In fact I suspect they would have done it immediately, but the story makes for good publicity for Mr C (No such thing as bad publicity, so they say).
