As a big fan of Richard Allinson I now listen to a number of others shows on BFBS Radio during the week/at the weekend.

Interestingly enough as well as BFBS radio being available through the internet, your skyplus box they are now broadcasting via DAB radio.

So they are now extending their reach via other mediums-if you have not tried listening to BFBS radio before-give it a go-they have some great presenters who play some really great music-they have plenty of specialist shows as well which the BBC has always thought was their domain-no longer.

Watch out BBC radio-the competition is hotting up all the time.

Toggy Tea Slurper-You are missing the point.

The competition all around the BBC are updating their shows/formats/bringing in new ideas -what are the BBC doing-NOTHING.

The BBC will continue to lose market/audience share-they need to evolve with the times-not rest on their laurels. Sad

BFBS is for Forces radio and others who wish to dip in. I very much doubt they will be overtaking Radio 2 and stations like Capital Radio and Smooth Radio.

I doubt the BBC will be worried about this. Anyway some of the money is funed to BFBS from the BBC and the government anyway....

Wait for the day they will have to play adverts.. The BBC board are looking into others ways to fund the BBC, and this is one.. Not too many, but a couple of shows..

Mark-BBC radio 2 continues to rest on its laurels imho.

Future sets of Rajars will continue to show Radio 2 losing market share.

Mark-You misunderstand what I am saying.

I am NOT saying BFBS is going to overtake Radio 2 and other stations.

What I am saying though is that BFBS and other radio stations will continue to eat into the BBC's market/audience share going forward because they are evolving at a much faster rate than the BBC. Take Radio 2 by way of an example- quite frankly the station is "standing still."

Listeners are becoming increasingly bored with the staleness which is Radio 2-how much longer are the listening audience going to stay loyal to Kennedy, Messrs Wogan, Bruce and Wright? With the recent introduction of DAB radio more and more stations are available to us. Radio 2 cannot just ignore what is going on around them much longer.

The British Forces Broadcasting Service has moved to the national commercial digital radio multiplex Digital One to fill the spot vacated by axed GCap Media station Core.

BFBS Radio began airing on Digital One on Sunday on a trial basis. The station provides news and music for service personnel and is also available via digital satellite and the internet.

BFBS plans to conduct research into the impact of the station's new nationwide footprint but could not confirm the length of the trial.

The forces station has been on air since 1943 and currently has bases in 11 countries including Iraq, Germany, Cyprus, Northern Ireland and the Falkland Islands. It also reaches Afghanistan and Kosovo via satellite.

BFBS plays on-air messages from service personnel on deployment along with programming aimed at their families.

The BFBS radio controller, Charles Foster, said: "We have relied on occasional links with the BBC and commercial stations or, more recently, the internet, to keep the forces and their families and friends at home in the picture.

"Our new DAB digital radio service means they'll always be able to keep in touch with family and friends back in the UK wherever they are in the world."

GCap Media's jukebox music service Core came off air on Friday night and was swiftly followed by UBC Media's spoken word Oneword station on Saturday.

Core had 122,000 listeners in the third quarter of last year, while Oneword had 151,000 during the same period. GCap is also planning to pull its music station Life from the Digital One multiplex.

Last week Digital One confirmed it was in talks with a number of broadcasters about the spare capacity.

Digital One, which broadcasts Planet Rock, TheJazz and the three national analogue stations Classic FM, Virgin Radio and TalkSport, has also started negotiations with Ofcom about the renewal of its licence, which is due to expire in just under four years.

Its interesting that commercial DAB stations are dropping like flies with 2 or 3 going off air in the space of a few weeks.

Whenever I listen to BFBS (especially BFBS1) it seems very focussed on its service audience so I'm not sure there will be too much cross over to the non-military general public. Still it is an interersting addition to DAB & I'm sure it will find an audience, especially if it is commercial free.
