Did anyone see this on BBC4 this week? It was really dated in a jolly hockeysticks sort of way, but the one hightlight for me was The Deep River Boys. They did a couple of Elvis songs, a calypso comedy number and a 'not to old to rock'n'roll song.' Very entertaining. |

Hi Briant
I did watch it! I think the only thing I can remember was the train and the signature tune though! Mind I was only a wee child at the time, My Mum used to watch it every week.
Some of the clips were the same as the ones from Pop Britannia and Stuart Maconie's programme. I watched them after and must admit wondered if I'd seen bits of the shows before.

I watched it too. Like you Helen, I soon realised I didn't really remember the show at all apart from the train and title song! mind you I was only 5 when it was on TV. Didn't Pete Murray look young??
I think I'd enjoy Thank Your Lucky Stars more than 6-5S but I did enjoy watching Eric Delaney on the Timpani and The Deep River Boys.
I thought some of the dancers in the audience were pretty entertaining too!
If I'm honest, it was easy to watch compared to "Beat Girl" ( 1959 with Adam Faith ) shown yesterday..

Only got to watch this when I went to my auntie Lottie's at Ilkeston, we didn't have a tele till much later, big argh for BB, then. But yes I remember the train and the title song, "The 6, 5 Specials Coming Down The Track/Line. The 6, 5 Specials Right On Track. Ready, Steady, Go, Juke Box Jury and then TOTPS are more my formative years era.

Too young to remember it myself, Top Of The Pops from the latter half of the 1960s onwards was my formative music years. I only have the vaguest memories of the original Juke Box Jury.
But for whatever reason a reference to the 6-5 special signature tune might turn up on a TV or radio programme. Didn't you get "over the points" repeated several times at a rapid-fire speed before the signature tune was sung properly. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

Six-Five Special by Don Lang & His Frantic Five, issued on HMV in 1957.
Over the points, over the points, over the points, over the points.
The 6.5 Special's steamin' down the line,
The 6.5 Special's right on time.
Coal in the boiler burnin' up'n bright,
Rollin' and a-rockin' through the night,
My heart's a-beatin' 'cos I'll be meetin'
The 6.5. Special at the station tonight.
The 6.5 Special better not be late,
The 6.5 Special platform 8,
The train starts a-brakin' hard as can be,
The station is a-shakin' like a tree'
And I won't be missin' that special kissin'
When the 6.5 Special brings my baby to me.
Hear the whistle blowin' 12 to the bar.
See the lights a-glowin' bright as a star.
Now the wheels a-slowin', can't be far.
Over the points, over the points, over the points, over the points.
I also watched the whole of "To Sir With Love" yesterday for the first time. It was pretty good! I didn't know Patricia Routledge ( Hyacinth Bucket... ) was in it! not as pretty as Judy Geeson though... _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Hi SanteFe
I forgot all about To Sir With Love, but have watched it loads of times.
Brings back memories of seeing it for the first time, prob 1968, with my aunt (Dad's younger and arty sister who did her best to lead me astray!) at the cinema in Hampstead where she had a tiny flat. I'd gone for the half term holiday and went of my first (under age) pub crawl as well!
Good film though, and I loved the clothes used to make my own mini skirts from remnants!

PS Staying with that era, I read somewhere that it's Vidal Sassoon's 80th birthday this week! _________________ 88 - 91 FM this is Radio 2 from the BBC!

Hello H Do you know if JR is still at Radio Norfolk? I can't see his name on the presenters page. |

Hi Briant,
No he isn't, he left there around the end of November I think. He's been doing a few shows on Radio Jackie over the New Year.

Happy, if somewhat hazy, memories of 6.5 Special.
Would like to see editions of Thank Your Lucky Stars again, if ITV has saved any.

Interesting article on the web about 6.5 Special - http://www.spencerleigh.demon.co.uk/Feature_6.5Special.htm
Scriptwriter Trevor Peacock - Jim Trott in Vicar of Dibley!!
Alas, can't remember seeing it - I'd be five and, although it started off on a Saturday, when I would have fleeting access at teatime to grandma's television, the dates in the article suggest it moved to a weekday when I didn't. _________________ Ron |

I waas too young to see 6.5 Special first time round. On seeing the episode BBC-4 screened, I got the feeling that they didn't know whether to be a straight rock show, light entertainment or a Blue Peter sort of thing.
The sequence with Jo Douglas going rock-climbing reminded me of similar items Valerie Singleton had done on Blue Peter. _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.
