One of my favourite singer/ songwriters died yesterday in San Diego, California, strangely, in the same hospital where he was born. John is best known for his 'Daydream Believer' which was a huge hit for The Monkees. He was a member of The Kingston Trio from 1961 to 1966, when he left for a solo career. 'California Bloodlines' was his most celebrated album, though 'Willard' was at least its equal. John campaigned for Robert Kennedy to be President in 1968 and was with him on the fateful US Election trail when RK was assassinated. In 1979, John was joined by Stevie Nicks and Lindsay Buckingham from Fleetwood Mac and they had hits with 'Gold', 'Midnight Wind' and 'Lost her in the sun.' I saw John live many times over the Eighties and got to be friends with him. He said that whenever he came to the UK, 'I knew you'd be here' at his concerts. No doubt there will be many tributes from those who knew him. This is mine. Goodnight, Lonesome Picker............

Sorry to hear of this. Daydream Believer is one of Mrs W's special favourites.

Thanks for the replies. Spencer Leigh wrote a wonderful obit on John Stewart in The Independent newspaper. You can read it online it you care to. I have written to Bob Harris asking him to play 'I remember America' on one of his programmes. Hopefully he will do so.
