Sad to hear of the death of Miles Kington, wit, author, jazz musician and columnist of The Independent since its foundation - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/media/miles-kington-polymath-wit-and-jazz-aficionado-dies-at-66-776222.html He also used to appear on panel games such as Call My Bluff, My Music etc.
In the days when I used to get the Indie, I would turn eagerly to his article - he had a similar outlook and vein of wit to the late Alan Coren, although a little of his "Franglais" books went a long way.
The article says he was a jazz afficianado - he was also a very good player of the double bass, and was a member of Instant Sunshine. One of his last articles, quite prophetic at the end, was about what he owed to Humphrey Lyttleton - http://www.independent.co.uk/opinion/columnists/miles-kington/miles-kington-everything-i-know-and-love-about-jazz-i-owe-to-humph-440418.html His only blank spot, as I recall, was an almost pathological dislike of the music of Cole Porter, in particular High Society; Now You Has Jazz would definitely not have been on his mp3 player. _________________ Ron |
