There has talk on TV recently about statues to various people such as Ernie Wise and Brian Epstein. This reminded me of a song by Willie Nile that I hadn't heard for years, that I used have on his first LP. I looked on the net and found I could get a new-ish CD of his first three albums for a bargain price. Willie still sounds good to me, and if you like early Springsteen, Mink DeVille or Steve Forbert you might find him worth a listen, as I did. The song in question is called 'They'll build a statue of you.'
Once heard never forgotten! |

Hello, Briant
Someone else I've never heard of . Searching around the usual places I can only find audio/video examples from his latest album Streets of New York, which is very Springsteen with a Dylanesque (on a good day) vocal. He obviously put together a cracking backing band for that to help make it sell. Sounds fine to me, but might not be much like the earlier albums you mention.
There's a customer's comment on American Amazon that suggests the sound quality of the Arista/Columbia compilation (the one you've got?) might not be very good. Is that so? _________________ Ron |

Hello Ron. I've been playing the CD through my computer and speakers and it sounds fine to me. Willie is another example of the underground or cult figures that I like to seek out and enjoy listening to. Elliott Murphy is one of my favourite re-discoveries from that period. Bruce Springsteen rates him enough to join him onstage, but Elliott remains largely a celebrated American exile with a huge European following. Last year I bought the Bob Lind album on Ace Recprds, a re-issue which also got plenty of rave reviews but probably passed most people by. Still, you pay your money and make your choice! |

Spotted and snapped up that Willie Nile compilation on Saturday - it was only slightly more expensive than the cheapest online - and am very pleased with it, although I've only had a chance to play it all the way through once. First few tracks reminded me (instrumentally) of Creedence, and the second portion of the Byrds (not surprising, when I then read in the notes of Roger McGuinn's involvement).
Elliott Murphy sounds pretty good too - I'll add him to my mental wish-list. _________________ Ron |

Good to hear that you enjoyed Willie Nile's CD, Ron. I've been playing 'Raw Vision' by The Tom Russell Band all day today. Again a compilation (1984-1994) of Tom's own songs, with tracks such as 'Blue Wing', 'US Steel', 'Haley's Comet', (Bill Haley that is!), 'Navajo Rug' and 'Veteran's Day' that Johnny Cash also has recorded. Recomended! |

That Tom Russell compilation sounds brilliant Briant, is it called "Raw Vision" and did you buy it recently and if so where from? Cheers

Hello BB. Yes that is the title, 'Raw Vision-1984-1994' by The Tom Russell Band. I bought mine online from a private UK seller via the Amazon site. Just looking then, the first few are from American sellers if you don't mind waiting. I have used the Swiss or German advertisers and they are reliable in my experience.
I suppose you could get other Tom Russell CDs with some of these songs on, but this one seemed the best to me. 'Blue Wing' is such a great story about a prisoner surviving behind bars, and 'US Steel' is another great story song that has you hooked from the opening guitar riff. Cheers! |

Hi Briant, I love Tom Russell songs and Blue Wing is one of my favourites, I have heard the original, by Tom Russell, only once on the radio. However, it is a great favourite with many of the artists that come to my local club, The Stable Bar at Leadenham, Lincs. In fact we had the fantastic John C. King there last Friday night and he sang Blue Wing. I will have to go on Ebay and have a look as Santa says there are 2 copies for sale on there at the moment. Thanks again Briant, it is appreciated.

Hello Spanners. Reading your posts you seem to be a lady with good taste in music! Let us all know what you think about Tom Russell when you have heard him a few times. Today I have been listening to early Ricky Nelson music featuring that great guitar player James Burton!
James has played in bands and on records for Bob Luman, Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley, Emmylou Harris and John Denver. |

Yes Tom Russell sounds good to my ears as well, from the samples anyway.
Slightly miffed that the UK retailer charges 40% more than it costs to have it shipped across from one in California. Bang goes my carbon footprnt target! _________________ Ron |

Even more slightly miffed to notice that the local HMV has got that Willie Nile compilation in their sale today for a fiver! They didn't have it at all, even online, when I was looking for it. _________________ Ron |

Hi Ron. I bought the 'Streets of New York' CD by Willie Nile too and it's wonderful! This is the most recent release by him as far as I know, being from 2006. It makes me want to see him 'Live!' I guess I'll have to go to New York to do that though! ''Back Home' and 'The day I saw Bo Diddley in Washington Square' are two of the best tracks on the CD! |

Well, two years later I finally got to see Willie Nile 'live' as support for The Alarm with Mike Peters. He was great onstage, full of energy and easily had the audience singing along. Willie's latest album is 'House of a thousand guitars' and I hear a new one is due out this year too. The Alarm have just recorded 'One guitar' (a song Willie wrote) that Mike Peters prefaced with some quotes by Woody Guthrie before singing it. There are clips on you tube if anyone wants to check it out. |
