Enjoyed it as usual, though I can understand why those who like American rock and roll (pre-Beatles) and Motown feel short-changed some weeks.

The post-Winwood Spencer Davis track was interesting -all violins/cellos, predating ELO somewhat, and the Standells' track was one I've not heard in many a year.

Mike Sarne's Just For Kicks is not exactly Hard To Get - the album has been out on CD for five years and is freely available online, if not down yer local HMV.

I agree- Hancock's Tune was an embarassment against the BBC original.

pickle - Stan Freberg's Great Pretender dates from 1957, unfortunately for the purposes of Saturday mornings, following the Platters' original hit from September 1956. In the dim and distant past when I used to make compliations on to reel-to-reel I infuriated my then girlfriend by splicing the end of Freberg's recording on to the end of Summer Nights from Grease, just before the last, bum, note - "You ruined the ending, one of the loveliest parts in the whole ********* piece!!"

A very bitty listen to today's programme--I may employ Listen Again.

Peter Sellers' Hard Day's Night was well worth a spin but I like Help on the B side (in the style of a poorly delivered sermon) even better.

A surprise to hear that Led Zeppelin were around then.

I was chuffed to hear Peter Jay and the Jaywalkers on this morning's show! He's a local chap and I used to work on his properties in my architectural days...
He still runs some entertainment places around here too.
I remember in our early days as a band, he came over to hear us rehearse Embarassed I felt very intimidated with him watching me play the drums as he was pretty good himself! Laughing Laughing

What did people think of this morning's SOTS special, connecting one track to the following one?

With its absence of requests and regular features, it was clearly designed to be prepared and recorded well in advance and allow the team to be off over the Christmas holiday.

Some may also feel that there were too many well-known tracks.

But having said all that, it made quite an enjoyable mixture and had clearly involved a good deal of thought and research.

I'd far rather have such a programme than no SOTS and, as long as this is viewed as no more than an occasional one-off, I'm quite happy overall.

Tell us what you thought.

Ian.

I feel the same Ian.

I wasn't paying much attention to the 'talk', just the music and the odd comment, and I missed the start so it took me a bit to 'get' what was going on.

It started to sound a bit like POTPs at one point, same producer of course so not surprising. I thought it was very flat.

I wonder what happened to Roger Bowman? It's no longer a must for me since he departed the show, and unless there is a fabulous track listed I don't bother with Listen Again.

I was thinking of Radcliffe and Maconie's 'The Chain' sequence - but they would have had some really clever links.

Now, whenever I hear Rag Doll (Four Seasons), I think of the judges on Strictly Come Dancing saying Kate Garraway was flung around like a rag doll!

Am not currently trying to do a weekly critique as it's hard to assess what's going on and concentrate on domestic issues concurrently and my more recent comments didn't stimulate much debate.

Great show as ever this morning but we seem to be getting far fewer requests since the new producer came. It seems hard to credit that demand has decreased substantially, so what gives?

Interesting that the connections show, broadcast on 29.12.07, has had such a positive response. More to follow, no doubt.

I hope so Ian. I really enjoyed the Connections show and hope they do more.

I'm with Helen (well, in my dreams anyway Twisted Evil ) I prefered the show when the Vocalist produced it. It seems to me too be a little too esoteric now.

On a slightly different note, I wonder if they will bring back toe Competions now that Popmaster has been reinstated

I just feel that SOTS has lost it's way, I still listen to some of it but not all of it and rarely catch what I have missed on listen again now. It looks like I am not alone as SOTS is no longer one of the most popular 5 shows on listen again.
I got fed up with putting requests in, as suggested for 60's tracks never played, for something special, (centenary of Scouting) and gave plenty of notice, these where not picked, yet someone who has had one or two requests played before were. I know none of us have a right to have a request played, but it seems odd that some people get 2 and even 3 requests played, for tracks that have been on before, yet others don't for rarity tracks and very special occassions. Confused

The Christmas/New Year "Connections" special presumably got so much favourable feedback because a lot of the records played were very well known. I noted that Brian said they'll do another one later in the year, but couldn't quite understand why it takes a long time, and is, by implication, difficult to compile, bearing in mind Phil Swern's vast collection and encyclopedic knowledge.

It has always been my perception that Phil puts less emphasis on the early sixities material, other than Billy Fury and the Everlies, though that was addressed to a certain extent this Saturday in the first hour (which I missed!). I do still enjoy all the music played, though.

Considering the amount of mail and requests they must get, the number which actually make it to air is pretty small, and, apart from the three-in-a-row they're rather laboured, and often quite naff.

Cracking show today, well I thought so - many tracks I haven't heard for a long time but remember with fondness, like Delaney & Bonnie's Superstar.

Neither of the two "Hard to Get" items (Acker Bilk and Jay & The Americans) are really so, but never mind, it was nice to hear them. Like many, no doubt, I've still got the green Columbia single of Stranger on the Shore and have always preferred its B-side.

What did you think of what I thought was a rather terse reply to the question 'have you stopped the competitions', from Brian? "In a word yes"............

I am sorely tempted to vent my anger on what has happened to the show to the producer, but then I thought I may want a request at some point! I still may write and complain as I think today's comments say it all.

Ah, Missed that one (difficult in this house to stay glued to it for every single minute!).

Disappointing, yes, but perhaps he didn't want to make any controversial comment, or make any promises they couldn't keep. With yesterday's revelations about old Russell Brand and Jo Whiley shows, I suppose it's going to take some time for normal service to be resumed.

One thing I didn't mention above, I'm not keen on PW's obsession with "outtakes" (the Hollies, yet again). If they're materially different, OK, but that French copy of We're Through just sounded as though someone had overdubbed it with a shaker.

Yes, that jarred with me, too. Some explanation for the non-resumption of competitions would be appreciated.

A good day for trad jazz today, with one of my favourite Kenny Ball tracks, Casablanca, and the Acker Bilk B side, which I hadn't heard before. Quite a find but I hope they'll give Stranger a spin one day.

Memories of Children's Favourites were conjured up by Perry Como's Delaware--awful yet somehow irrestible!

Last week they played David Essex's 'Thigh High' and Brian Matthew said that Essex had been drummer in a band called the Evertons.

I thought it was the Everons- so called because they were 'never off'. Otherwise they could have been the Toffees, as in Everton FC?

By the way, I loved the Dave Edmunds interview in Classic Rock where he talked about working on the 'Stardust' movie and soundtrack.

I was interested in Delaney and Bonnie's 'Groupie/Superstar' because of the Carpenters' and Bette Midler's subsequent covers.

And then Jackie Clunes did 'Thong Song' in the style of Karen Carpenter on 'Jammin''!

I think you're right, pickle. (Everons)

Easy mistake to make if you're reading a script (might even have been a typo) and not familiar with the intimate biography of the artist, but surprising that neither Brian nor Phil picked up on it and did a re-take.

A particularly good selection of my favourites today.

The Marbles' Only One Woman, and also its B side, By the Light of the Burning Candle, reminded me of a young lady of the era!

The only other milk song that I can think of is the jingle that used to go with the Drinka Pinta Milka Day ad.

I've a feeling Johnny Cymbal's Teenage Heaven was banned by the BBC--can anyone elaborate?

A classical touch to side 2. The Herd's From the Underworld always puts me in mind of Kathleen Ferrier's What Is Life, which covers exactly the same scenario, and the Jackie Wilson one is based on the opening of Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto no 1.

As there are now 100 posts on this thread, is it time to start a new one?

They played the Little Richard version of Get Down & Get With It today! Hands up all the Slade fans who expected it to be followed with an early track of theirs, say 'Knocking Nails Into My House'.

Laughing I'm fairly sure some people have been sued for being further away from a "borrowed" riff/tune.

Milk songs? Sour Milk Sea, written by George Harrison for Jackie Lomax?
