I've never liked The Organist Entertains, or organ music that much but there I am tonight watching Nigel Ogden on the Compton playing hits from the 60's and find myself tapping my foot .... only to see the shot of the enthusiastic audience members also tapping their feet!!! quick play me some Deep Purple!!! I found it strange the programme didn't mention the Icon Wogan or Wrighty, Evans etc, but having looked at the intro again it seems the intention was just to cover the shows that "carried on" from the Light Programme.
So why wasn't it called "What Ever Happened to the Light Programme"? Very Happy

I actually sat at a mighty Compton organ today, whilst doing a service at the Kinema in the Woods, not on the organ I might add. What nostalgia, takes me back to Saturday mornings matinees at Derby in the 50's Shocked

I watched most of it and recorded it. I don't think David Jacobs or Malcolm Laycock got a mention? I enjoyed seeing/hearing Desmond, he has a real relationship with his listeners, I can understand how upset he was when he was moved from his Sunday slot after 23 years but I suspect he took most of his listeners with him?

That's what I meant, although enjoyable, it was a little sketchy. I'd like to have seen David Jacobs too. Maybe there's more to come?
I enjoyed Desmond's section and also Humphrey's part. I had no idea he still plays!

Only saw part of this, and the FNIMN that followed - hopefully they'll repeat sometime.

I never liked The Organist Entertains either, partly because the awesome power of the organ, be it church, cinema or Hammond, is greatly diminished when broadcast or put on record, so that it sounds positively tinny, and partly because, in the Light days, it was nearly all Reginald Dixon, who, as far as I could tell, couldn't keep time to save his life, and he sounded awful.

Brass bands also sound infinitely better live, but I did enjoy what little there was devoted to them, and to the faintly subversive Humph, still blowing strong. I thought the depiction of the average FNIMN audience as a regular OAP outing a trifle cruel, even if it may be true, and the actual recording that followed, packed with old radio themes, couldn't fail to please - just a shame it was on at the same time as a different edition on the radio.

I used to enjoy FNIMN when I was 19/20--but maybe I was born old!

And if it is a programme enjoyed mainly by pensioners--so what?

Incidentally, I haven't seen the documentary yet but it's been recorded and I should see it in the next few days.

If you missed this and didn't record it, it's on again on BBC4 at 7pm on Sun 14 Oct.

Have now seen this film. Inevitably I found some parts more interesting than others but overall it served as a timely reminder of why I still listen to R2.

Was struck by a remark of Desmond Carrington, who said that he is still presenting the programme at 81 because he knows that people out there depend on him. If only more people showed that sort of attitude. I hope he'll be entertaining us for a long time yet.

Finally saw this programme on Friday night on BBc4. It was a bit of an odd mix with some frankly quite weird listeners selected. Who would go to the pub to guess the titles of the songs played by Desmond Carrington (hint: they are uploaded on his website in advance). And if the lady with the horses is such a Des fan, why does she only switch the show on at 7.20 on a Tuesday night? Rolling Eyes
