is there any need for him to talk through songs - I was once VERY annoyed that he began talking over The Coral 'In the Morning' and it wasn't even half way through!?

he does annoy me for many reasons but this is one of the main things, other presenters do this too - namely... Steve Wright - they love the sound of their own voice too much

Julia, a pet hate of mine. I rarely catch Steve Wright but did accidently today; the missus and I drove to the gym just before five today and SW played Ian Dury's 'Rhythm Stick'. Now, millions love this record, it's catchy rhythms and jazzy score, and hilarious lyrics. What does SW do half way through, predictable really, starts shouting 'Hit Me! Hit Me!' talks through rest and shouting 'We Miss You Ian!" and I don't know what else.

I don't want to dwell on this episode much longer, SW is unbelievable. I would love to see Mark Radcliffe back in the afternoons, I might deliberately listen.

The answer of course to Chris being short of time, thus causing him to talk over record endings, is to give him an extra hour. Start the show at 4.

The arguement for talking over intros and the end of songs is that it conveys a faster pace to the show, which if it is mean primarily to be an entertainment show is a good thing.

You need to remember that Radio 2 does 2 types of shows : one meant mainly to entertain which are usually personality driven and another type of show which is music lead and more low key: the specialist shows.

Julia, it annoys me too but in the case of The Coral I'll make an exception - dreadful group! Wink

other presenters entertain ('make it a fast pace show' or whatever) but don't feel the need to sing along to songs/talk through them and thus ruin them

-oh the Coral are fabi Ian! Wink

Thought I'd check if this subject was knocking about!
Evans is worse than other presenters at doing this. I don't think it's that he runs out of time. He just has to cram SO much - TOO much- into his show, and as someone else said, to move the show along at a quicker pace. Trouble is, when I have been listening over the last few months, I sit there thinking 'yeah, nice song...' then immediately waiting for him to cut over it. And not just 30 seconds from the end, which I can understand, as other presenters commonly do this. Sounds like a pet peeve, but if you're going to play a song, let us hear the damn thing, not Evans telling johnny sport he's had a haircut at a random inopportune moment of a song.

Extending the show wouldn't change things one bit. He'd only add more substandard features and more 'banter'.

I think the main to offenders are Sarah Kennedy and Steve Wright.

Sarah Kennedy talks over the tops of records, interrupts them with inane drivel, stupid sound effects and general prattle. Steve Wright favours the option of singing, whistling and talking over the tops of records played.

Look at it this way: the music is playing over Chris Evans's voice. Now it doesn't sound so bad does it! Smile

That, my friend, would be a blessing in disguise if he didn't talk too much!

Chris Evans is STILL the main culprit for talking over tracks!

I do wish that listeners would stop ringing in on Fridays to request songs to interrupt Chris talking...

(only to hear half of the songs played in full before he starts talking again!)

In fact, let's extend his show another hour, give him more space to play songs in full. That might work... but then he'll need more business and sport bulletins, and he'll have to play more songs...oh, better give him another hour to talk....and on and on and on

I tried to get through on his slot during Children in Need, just to request a track without him talking over the end! And it was only Song 2 by Blur (2minutes tops!) Alas, I did not succeed. Rant over.

I like the show the rest of the week. On Friday 1st Feb he talked at the beginning, half way through and cut off the end of the songs playing only about a Minute and half. He did sound hyper active. It will spoil the show if he continues to do that. ( Not sounding Hyper ) Cutting off songs.

Laughing

So you want him to stop cutting off songs but to still sound hyper?

His hyper-activity is the cause of his stupid voice so I would like that to stop too and then I might want to listen to drivetime .... some day Rolling Eyes

I'm with you all the way there John. It does my head in. To show a modicum of fairness, not just Evans, Brand too. And that's just the trailers!! I see Lesley Douglas is at it on 6 music too. Have you seen the 'Feedback' message board lately, George Lamb thread!! It's reminiscent of the outcry against Chris Evans on the R2 boards.

Maybe he gets an extra spoonful of sugar on Fridays. Cool

If I ever picked a song on his show, I'd like him to play the whole thing, rather than a minute and a half tops! Same with that jukebox jury thing he does - if people are supposed to vote whether a song is good or not, let them hear the WHOLE song! I know he only does this to squeeze everything in, but it sounds very unprofessional. Along with that bell!!!

Of course, if he stopped sounding hyper, there'd be a mass protest, people demanding license fees back. Just wait for that Evans hype to hit you at 7.30am...soon enough.... Evil or Very Mad

I'd go for that, I don't listen to early mornings on R2 anymore! Razz

Even though I have tried to put up with Evans recently if I'm working, I just can't do it.
I find him just so irritating and hyper as you said, whether interviewing people or babbling on about nothing.

A couple of weeks back he was really pushing that Fox woman to talk about something she obviously didn't want to. It was embarrassing.

I think the honest fact of the matter is that all DJs talk over the records and they all do it just as much as each other (yes even TW does it).

The 'worst offenders' are usually the DJs you dislike the most only because you notice it more from them.

Very Happy

There's a difference between Wogan maybe cutting a song (occasionally, I might add) before the pips, and Evans talking over each of the songs he plays on his show. That includes the jukebox jury feature thing, where the whole idea is to listen to the song to judge it, and the Friday requests, where people want to hear the songs they chose, even if a lot of it is the same old stuff!

Regardless of whether I like Evans or not, I'd find the show somewhat easier to listen to if he didn't purposely cut over each song! Surely he's not more important than the music? Wink

A breath of fresh air!!!
My only gripe is that the quality of the shows tends to flow with his moods Confused
And yes I agree, I do find it very frustrating when he (they) talk all over the records. Records!! I really am showing my age Very Happy .
Off to get the kids in bed now, I'll be back good an proper in the morning.

I've got an idea, but I've been waiting for radio 2 to publicise him with some trailers on the odd occasion ...you know, here and there, the odd other daytime show or two... Wink
