I see that after polling their listeners Virgin Radio have decided to ban playing Beatles records.

Instrumental in getting the ban in play has been Roger Daltrey lead singer of the Who.

Bizzare ban if you ask me.

A bit of sour grapes because the Beatles were better and are better-remembered than the Who?

Great News, now perhaps we can move on, they haven't done anything for over 40 years, give other musicians a chance. Very Happy

Don't understand this comment. It isn't as if we were previously getting wall-to-wall Beatles and nothing else. I still think this is a short-sighted decision. It would be like Radio 3 refusing to play any more Mozart.

I can't see the point of that. I am reminded of when Radio 1 did the same with Status Quo tracks some years ago. Presumably some recently elevated spotty youth with 'Blue sky thinking' specs on decided that they were now 'uncool'! Rolling Eyes

Yes of course no influence on any modern bands/groups/musicians, they have no relevance in the annals of popular music? When was the last time Mozart did anything, should we move on from Mozart as well then Nod? Confused

Nice one, Bryant! Laughing Laughing
Didn't poor old Radio 1 try a similar sort of wheez a while ago?
Does this mean Virgin Radio are sinkin?
Once you start banning records, the only way is down...

Same old influence argument, yes put them in the Annals Very Happy
Save us from anymore Paul Mac, they even had him on the Brits.
There are plenty of recent bands to listen to as well.

No one's saying that newer bands shouldn't get airplay but for that to lead to a blanket ban on the Beatles is a ludicrous over-reaction.

Yes these newer bands come and go, like "Punk" around for a while but real quality stands the test of time, I like and listen to some newer bands and hope they get plenty of airplay; however, why ban something that's just classic rock/pop/balads?

Ban Beatle tracks? crazy idea, but on the other hand I never listen to Virgin. ( is it still on AM?)

I'd like to propose a motion to ban Elton John from every station.

They should ban anything by Scissor Sisters, Mika, Robbie Williams and Brave Kylie.

All these blighted my time volunteering at a certain charity shop.

While I don't personally live each day in the hope of hearing the Beatles on any radio station - I can dip in and have a basinful from my own collection whenever I take the fancy - I think it's a very silly idea, and smacks more of a publicity stunt than anything else, one that will probably prove to be counter-productive, although Virgin's stations (with the exception of Classic Rock) seem to be positioning themselves to appeal to a younger audience who may not bother.

I remember the outcry when, ten years or so ago, Radio 2 decided to remove recordings from the 50s and earlier from the daytime menu. That effectively meant Sinatra and similar, because Presley, Holly etc still get played. However there will probably come a time not too distant when they decide to draw another line (pre Beat groups, or even 60s altogether?). Mind you, they'll probably have to dispense with Wogan, Walker and Bruce first (not to mention Sarah!). Heaven forbid! Laughing

If they did that daytime Radio2 would have to shut down
