Kevin Keegan has been announced as the new manager of Newcastle United.

"Wor Kev" has returned home - remains to be seen how much ground he needs to make up having been out of the game for so long....

I must admit, he wouldn't have been my choice, but I'll still back him, even if it's only because we need some stability, man-management and inspiration at the club. He's certainly got the local newspaper's sport forum buzzing....

Apparently the replay against Stoke tonight has been put back 15 minutes due to the huge crowd that's formed outside St James' Park wanting tickets for the game since the announcement this afternoon. KK is allegedly going to be introduced to the fans at the match.

Local radio was reporting that fans were dancing and hugging each other outside the ground for the last couple of hours. I can well believe it....

(A local bookies is however giving odds of 9/2 for him being gone by the end of the season, though.)

Its just more of the same for Newcastle then isn't it? A short term manager with a limited vision.

A perspective from London/Chelsea if I may be so bold.

Keegan's appointment is NOT in isolation. IMHO I think Shearer will be brought into the equation working with Keegan sooner rather than later.

Good luck to Newcastle-the Premiership is a poorer place without a strong Newcastle competing in it.

I agree with all of that, Mark.

Like many famous England players before, and since, Keegan inspires players to give their all, but his track record has shown that he lacks tactical sophistication and steel, not to mention an inablility to handle stress, and the media when things don't always go right. That's some job description for his No 2, and if there's to be a place for Alan Shearer I suspect it should be behind whoever that may be.

Watching the tv pictures last night it did strike me how old he looks, Keegan, that is, especially galling as he's only one year older than I am.

I'd agree with both your and Mark's comments, Ron. Word is today that Chris Coleman has resigned from his job in Spain and will be unveiled as Kevin's No.2 at the press conference tomorrow afternoon. There are also rumours of Tony Adams coming as a defensive coach.

Keegan would be the first, I'm sure, to admit he's not the world's greatest manager - but his strengths are exactly what we need right now - motivating the players, taking the game to the opponent and getting the fans behind the team all the way. His failings can be addressed along the way with a decent staff, and I'm sure that's something that Mike Ashley, Chris Mort and Kevin himself have in mind.

Interesting times ahead at the 'Toon - there were fans in the street outside the ground last night shaking boxes of Kelloggs "Special K"! Laughing

My sympathies are for the Toon Army. I look forward to watching Newcastle at The KC next year. I am convinced that he will either:

Get the team relegated

Not stay beyond summer

Get fed up and leave.

This is a team that if it is not to live on past gloryies need to Get a manager that has some tactical nouse, spend money, and make a break with the past.

So 2 months on the Keegan appointment is looking a bit shaky. Has he won a game yet?

No, but at least the football is more entertaining.

He'll do a good job of getting them playing attacking football, but he's not had the chance to spend any money getting the kind of players he wants. Once he's got the players he wants, the games will be much more entertaining.
