Anyone hear the handover between Dermot O'Leary and Paul Gambacinni yesterday at 6.30pm. Paul asked Dermot if they (assume Radio 2 bosses) had announced the new schedules yet. Dermot didn't know and Paul's reply was to congratulate Dermot and said that he'd see him in April.

Has Dermot been given a promotion from April then -perhaps a 3 hour show. Looks like he's going to be given a few Saturdays off now until April.

Wonder what's going on.

I hope not, but then again has anyone read the 6 music message boards lately. The natives seem to have become very restless there of late, so gawd knows what she might have up her sleeve for R2. I await with a great deal of trepidation.

Well I'm surprised Iain Smith's words of authority haven't graced this subject yet (!), but having listened to Gambo and O'leary, all I'll say is at least it sounds like Gambo will still be around. Fingers crossed for Stuart, I really don't see why his show needs to go...oh wait, I'm speculating!

I did say some time ago on another message board that Stuarts show only had a short shelf life.

Shame on those who enjoy it. Maybe 3.6pm for Dermot?

Why should it have a short shelf life? It's been running for, what, 2 years now? More? That's not bad. And it's a considerably better show than Dermot's.

And should forthwith be restored to it's original full 3 hour glory!

Yeah, it's coming up to 2 years since Stuart began the show, taking over from Evans who has now been on Drivetime for almost 2 years!!! Kind of puts things in perspective... Wink

In those 2 years, Stuart's show has been messed around by the powers that be. First, the critical list segment has been reduced from its hour-long show to a 10-minute segment before the news. Second, his show's 3 hours were cut to 2 and a half to make way for Brand. Third, he lost the retro quiz (the previous show highlight) with the phones scandal. Then, Dermot's tv demands took priority over Radio 2, shifting Stuart to teatime then back, and I know this last point is slightly weak, but they might as well kept things as they were, save for Dermot and Maconie's embarrassing handovers!!!

I can see Dermot getting a mid-afternoon 3 hour slot. So if Gambo stays too, max. 2 hours, someone's coming in. Maybe the Comedy hour will go too?!! Very Happy

I don't think the Comedy Hour will go - it's an actual BBC success story. No, really.

I used to like that, particularly in the days of The News Huddlines etc, but hardly hear it now. It was when they started on those compilation shows that I began to listen less to it.

Ah well, blame Coronation Street for the demise of News Huddlines (and listen out for repeats on BBC7) but despite the questionable quality the rest of the Comedy Hour is doing well. One of the shows has even gone on to win an Emmy and Grammy in it's TV form, and at least 3 other shows are heading to TV.

O' Leary's just said he'll be on 2-5pm on Saturdays from April....

Um... so what happens between 5pm and 8?

Gambo 5-7?

Gambo 5 - 6.30?

Someone new - 6.30 - 8pm? Baker?

I somehow don't think Maconie will still be there whatever.

Hmm...

Ah, must be Brand then! Only a matter of time before Douglas upgraded her fave.

So...

5-7 Gambo?

7-9 Brand

9-10 Doc/concert

10-1 Harris

Warm??

This is a shame, though I guess it was inevitable that Stuart would lose this slot. Still, he (should) keep his drivetime dep. duties, and the more that Mark Radcliffe covers for Wrighty, the more we get 'the Stuart Maconie show' at night! Very Happy

At least Gambo should still be around, but as for the slot in the schedule after Dermot, it would be strange to put on a weekly show for just an hour and a half, unless it was specialist in some way. We deserve a compromise; give Gambo 2 hours again (come on, Russell Brand certainly won't get any less than 2 hours, and moving him forward would be a liability pre-9pm!) and bring back The Critical List!

If the Pete Mitchell rumours are true, I'd give it a try. But like I said, giving him a weekly slot for an hour and a half would seem strange, unless it was specialised.

Overall, an inevitable move (i still think Dermot's better suited to tv), but a shame to see Stuart out of the afternoon slot. His show reminded me of Allinson's in certain ways, and it's pretty safe to say that the diversity of Stuart's playlists will not be repeated by Dermot.

Most of Douglas' signings are much better suited to TV, then again that's where they have come from. Why not leave music radio to proper DJs? Perhaps someone should start the 'Campaign For Real DJs'!

You know, I'd love to know what the experienced presenters of Radio 2 REALLY think of Douglas and her mostly dire changes ........... would love to hear the honest opinions of Bob Harris, Stuart Maconie, Mark Radcliffe, Terry Wogan, Johnnie Walker etc - trouble is they would probably be fired as a result.

Same with the original 6 music presenters. e.g - Gideon Coe, Steve Lamacq, Bruce Dickinson, to name three.
