I hope everyone survived intact up to midday.

Most of the spoof articles in today's papers have ben well covered elsewhere.

Similarly, the Panorama spaghetti harvest spoof from way back in 1957 is too well remembered to require reproduction here.

The only other old April Fool that I can recall right now was perpetrated on Desert Island Discs, around 1963, when Roy Plomley was in the chair.

They got a member of the BBC Drama Repertory Company to pose as an elderly diplomat whose name was unfamiliar because he'd spent most of his life in Tibet. He chose the eight most bizarre records that they could find in the BBC Library. I can't recall what outlandish luxury he asked for but his choice of book was the telephone directory for any major city in the world.

Some of the audience clearly got and enjoyed the joke, whilst others were baffled.

RP's 1975 book, Desert Island Discs, has all the details.

Ian.

Loved the one about the flying penguins on the BBC this morning, I just don't know how Terry Jones kept a straight face.

The penguins is so well done. Just one really fake looking shot as the migration comes to an end and the toucan looks round quizzically. It's a 90 second streaming video clip on iPlayer for anyone who hasn't seen it:

It was good, just a shame that the presenters felt obliged to labour the "unbelievable" comments.

I was too young for Panorama's spaghetti tree, but I do remember Esther Rantzen's Lirpa Loof (a new exhibit at London Zoo), and also a believable report on Nationwide about a new EU building regulation requiring electric sockets in new houses to be installed "upside down".

In the Sun a Turtle smoking

Docs stretch Nicolas Sarkozy in a pioneer stretch surgery in a bid to make him taller. Laughing

I liked the stretch surgery one - especially the consultant's name. It was on GMTV this morning: Nicolas Sarkozy is to undergo revolutionary growth surgery, as he is fed up with being towered over by his lovely wife. Monsieur Luke Biggeur is his specialist, apparently.
