More change for change's sake, and I wonder how much the exercise has cost?

They have made much of the fact that the various fragmented designs can be put together like a jigsaw to make the complete royal coat of arms.
That photograph certainly makes them look like toy money. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2008/04/02/ncoin102.xml

Some people have bemoaned the removal of Britannia, but surprisingly no-one has mentioned that they have also dropped the numbers 1, 2 etc, which may be a problem for tourists and others with language difficulties.

On past form it looks as though there's an English/Welsh/Scottish variant every five years, the last Welsh one being of the Menai Bridge in 2005 - http://www.royalmint.gov.uk/Corporate/BritishCoinage/CoinDesign/OnePoundCoin.aspx

It comes as no surprise to me at all but I think the new designs are completely abysmal, I mean come on.... who's fooling who here? this is like the BA tailfin caper.
I'd say any first year design student could come up with this garbage! I was turning out this "sectional" tripe 20 years ago and it wasn't clever then.
What's happened to this country in that we feel we have to change everything for change sake?

Yes, but there is no Welsh point of reference in the new sets, because Wales isn't represented on the coat of arms, so I'd be surprised if nothing is made of it. They were designed by a Welshman too!

Does anyone remember that map maker who drew a map of the British isles for a stamp design a few years ago and omitted Wales?!
