I was really pleased to see the restored Vulcan fly the other day, it must be a real credit to those who've made it possible. I can't imagine the red tape that it involved...
I remember seeing a Vulcan at a school trip to one of the local airbases here in Norfolk - must have been around 64ish.. the plane came in very low ( almost sneeked up) and climbed steeply in front of the gasping crowd with an unbelievable roar.
I was truly amazed by the sight and will never forget it.
Well done to those who made it possible. Hopefully it'll take part in the Lowestoft airshow one day. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes, but I think they've made the ears too big and now he's two tone green! _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

Yes indeed. I look forward to seeing XH558 at an airshow this year. I hope it shows up at Farnborough. They have one at Wellesbourne Mountford that they sometimes do ground runs up & down the runway with (fast taxis, if you prefer) _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

I've been to the Lowestoft Airshow a couple of times and it's a great day out ( Lowestoft is a coastal resort town for those that don't know, and the planes fly parallel with the beach & prom.)
The thing that really bugs me about it is, just 7 miles north is Gorleston and Great Yarmouth, both holiday resorts with equally long promenades and beautiful beaches, and yet the two towns cannot seem to agree to hold the show jointly!
Most years we hear how "the airshow might not happen this year unless we find a sponsor" but wouldn't it make sense to let the planes carry on for a few more miles and amaze three times the people?? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

I worked on Vulcans in the late 60s. To me they are the definitive example of British design and engineering superiority. Sadly this did not last .
We replaced the Vulcan with the F4 Phantom because Weggie Ben, under Wilson's government, cancelled the TSR2. They also made the British Aircraft Industry cut up all the jigs to ensure that any future Government would find it too costly to reinstate the TSR2 into service.
Later models of the Vulcan had several of the electronic systems stolen from the TSR2 retro-fitted, eg Terrain Following Radar, thus turning a high level bomber into low level hedge hopper to dodge enemy radar.
One of the craziest designs for the Vulcan was to carry a Gnat Fighter under each wing, complete with pilot, to be released as suicide air superiority protection!! Yes this really is true, refer to Bill Gunston's "Project Cancelled".
