Did anyone catch coverage of the Newcastle/Sunderland match last Sunday on Sky Sports?

My son and grandson watched it and I dipped in as household chores permitted.

One thing I didn't pick up on at the start of the game was English National Opera principal bass/regional treasure/Toon Army fan Graeme Danby leading the crowd in singing Blaydon Races (a hot competitor for the National Anthem in these parts).

For those who were there this was a magical moment but of course the TV commentators talked all over it.

Did anyone see this?

Ian.

Hi Ian,

My O/H was at the match and said the Blaydon Races was absolutely fantastic. My mum and I weren't that keen on watching the match so didn't see it.

Hello H I've just been looking at some CDs on Amazon and I saw a Susan Maughn song title called 'Hand a handerchief to Helen.' I though we could follow this with 'Bless you' by Tony Orlando and 'I'm getting better' by Jim Reeves for your '3 in a row' for SOTS! Laughing

Hi Briant

What a fantastic choice! I don't think I've heard the Susan Maughan one even though it could be my signature tune.

Hi Helen.

LOL at Briant's ideas.

The Susan Maughan track was the follow-up to Bobby's Girl and, as was commonplace in those days, resembled it very closely. In terms of sales, it was far less successful. I've got both tracks on an old cassette somewhere.

Strange that the ONE Show did an item on the Blaydon Races last night, so soon after I raised the subject.

Ian.
