Did anyone hear the Chairman of the BBC Trust Sir Michael Lyons speaking on Jeremy show on Tuesday?

Very interesting discussing Russell Brand how he's not really right for Radio 2 and about broadcasting from a Ice Cream Van a few weeks back.

Also mentioning how much Jonathan Ross is being paid. Michael Lyons mentioning that some sort of pay structure will be released later this year, but no one will be named like the MP's were.

Trailers need to get the right balance. They are usually shown on TV or played on the Radio so it gives people a choice where they can tune too.

Yes I heard that section on the Vine show and thought he came across as reasonably sincere. He answered a few concerns but all too often lapsed into politician mode where he'd waffle rather than get to the nuts of the issue. I thought that one man who gave him a right grilling was brilliant!! Jeremy had to turn down his mic just to hear the Chairman speak. You could hear the caller muttering in the background!!

But it is a serious point about Jonathon Ross' wages. Is he really worth it?? I don't think so.

Perhaps it's time they had the controller of Radio 2 on to discuss why they've got rid of Stuart Maconie's saturday slot.......

Are any of the 'celeb names' (I will name no names) worth all that money. Certainly not. I've heard R2 isn't doing Guildfest this year. I wonder if squandering such huge sums of money on them has anything to do with it.

The licence fee can't pay for this? It can pay the other huge presenter bills not the ones on the network at present, but those they draft in from time to time? Although I could say some like Brand and Ross are paid too much for what they do for the network.

It certainly sounded an interesting programme. I only heard bits of it so hopefully I'll listen again.
From what I heard though, it seems to me like Sir Michael Lyons might as well be a politician! he's just not in touch with people's opinions of the Beeb.. presenters like Ross and Evans are paid too much, there is too much swearing on TV and the news presentation is rubbish!
That's in my opinion of course...

I liked the part about why the need for 450 news staff to attend a sports affair with only 300 sports persons taking part! ( rough figures ) Laughing

Its not the function of the Trust to interfere in day to day matters. It is supposed to regulate the BBC not run it.

Well ok, but if so, why was he on the JV show to answer to public criticism? Again I only heard parts but he seemed concerned about some issues raised...

Shame no-one brought up the George Lamb debarcle over on 6 music. I wonder what he would have had to say about that, and the powers-that be's lack of admitting that, perhaps, they might have got it wrong this time. It's still rumbling on apace over on the 6 music boards. I suppose the nearest we got to it was Brand (who was foisted upon us from 6 music)

Shame nobody asked him how Radio 2 was allowed to turn from a station for adults into yet another station for young people.

Well said. It's increasingly trying to 'yoof'-up itself, and is surely alienating many listeners while trying to attract younger audiences. Just look at the playlist, there's some pretty band stuff that, let's be honest, should be on Radio 1! Why does Radio 2 keep feeling the need to cross over into R1 territory? I don't know why it feels it needs to fill the supposed void left when R1 was restructured in the early-mid 1990s.

I think this is why Sir Michael wasn't trying to answer questions over pay awards? The few Rant phone calls makes the show more lively. We should have more of this. Laughing

Well said - I wish the BBC Trust would keep its snout of such matters. Russell Brand might not appeal to everyone but he's proven nothing but a hit on Radio 2. His programme is regularly top of the podcast, too.
