Hmmm talking of treats ... Chris Evans was describing a couple of the tracks he played last night as "Treats" Does he read this forum? Does anybody? Is he nicking our ideas? Is he taking the mick? Has his show ran out of steam... hmmmm or does it run on gas? Is a job offer or a large fat cheque in the post to me? I'm on to you Mr Evans... Wink

Another cracking show from Alex this morning, producing the Dog rough guide to the Dark........

Lester's Library this morning, Coverdale & Page - Easy Does It ... now that... is a real proper treat........ yummy!

Yes, Lester's Library was a treat- I'd just got in the car to go to work, switched on the radio, and I thought to myself "By Jingo, that sounds like the dulcet tones of Mr David Coverdale- accompanied by Mr James Page on his electric guitar"

Joy unbridled!!!!! Laughing Laughing Laughing Laughing

Looking forward to a rare chance to listen to the Dark Lord live whilst I'm driving down to North Wales early tomorrow morning. Very Happy

Just what I need to keep myself awake whilst hurtling along the A1....

So what do we all think of Alex's show coming from London?

You just can't trust the laws of physics these days, and this is why: you see, the old show, the Birmingham one - remember that? - Yes . Good. Well; it was perfect ( no discussion), perpetual motion- all forces perfectly in balance and with a beautiful sound - like a Ferrari 360 at 4500 revs in 3rd gear. So in theory, no improvement possible. Wrong! Moving to London has done something, nothing tangible or anything you can put your finger on- it just feels better- more umph . You know what I think? It must be the change of filling station- different food, beer and BBC tea- it's the only difference. So what are they putting in the tea at broadcasting house- what ever it is, I'd like some!

Alex is heading off for another American Adventure ( AA2- Smokie and the Blog Runner )for a month from the middle of June. Pete Mitchell will be filling in. So for those of you who ( like me) cannot get through a day without a bit of Alex then it's almost time to start recording a months worth of shows.

I've been planning to do a spot of recording Rachel but as of yet have been unsuccesful. For some reason the iplayer won't allow me to record the sound coming from my speakers to any format. Any help would be most appreciated!

Hi John,

There are a few ways to do it , if you have Sky+ just record it on there ( you have to listen at home,) but if like me you live under trees so huge they black out the sky (blue) and the Sky TV stuff, then get yourself a snazzi Mobi-blu MP3 Player FM Radio Recorder- thing, they record direct from air to MP3. The file size is huge, recording over night and fast forwarding to 3 am takes about 10 minutes - but it's worth it:)

one of these:- ( it's an updated version of the one I have but it should work the same.....

Hi Rachel and John,

I use Total Recorder and record from Listen Again although you can do it live as well.

I just use the basic version. Hope this helps.

Like Rachel suggested, I simply record the radio through my Free View equipped Panasonic DVD recorder.. it's great! Razz

I've used Sky+ on the odd occasion but I find the PC easier to store things on. For some reason I don't like listening to radio or music via the TV. I can't explain it though!

Me neither Helen, it's knowing that the screen is on and doing nothing that bugs me!
Remember when we only had radios to listen to the radio? Laughing

It doesn't bother me because, on Virgin cable at least, the screen is completely black/blank (after the first 5 minutes when they show the station logo); it probably isn't a very energy-efficient way of having the radio on, though.

Thank-you Rachel and Helen! I shall be storing up some Best of the Best Time of the Day show to keep me happy whilst the Dark Lord is galavanting through America. I am extremely grateful for your help.

I too find it a little strange listening to the radio on the TV, just doesn't seem right.

Alex is having a bit of a Knees up on his show this week. Send in a picture of your knees with a brief description of them - personality- likes, dislikes etc... and your knees could be up on Alex's web page.

Didn't hear much about knees this morning, but some daft thing about connecting days of the week with colours - it's got a long scientific name which I can't remember now.

I phoned in to suggest that Tuesday is cardinal red - because he commited the cardinal sin of talking over the ending of Blinded By The Light Evil or Very Mad . Unfortunately couldn't get through.

Ah the telephone answerer didn't turn up this morning - so the producer was multi-tasking- probably why you didn't get through. Yeah I noticed that the Knees thing didn't get a mention this morning- it's like that on an organic show though- you just have to run with it. If you look on the "show business" area of Alex's R2 web-page- you'll see the knees thing on there. I expect it will crawl in and out of show over the next few weeks. Talking over tracks? Surely not! I expect the producer was on the phone Smile

Stop press!! Alex did mention the knees thing after 5am.... Very Happy Very Happy

Titanic Ticker!.... did any of you hear Alex talking about some pretty expensive watches made from recovered bits of the Titanic? Titanic?! Yes! The Titanic, you know, that ship they made all the movies about- always sinks at the end. Yep, got it, I thought you might. The watches apparently ( for the discerning customer) don't actually work- (although one could guess that they will show the correct time twice a day), but they look great and cost up to £150,000 ( ish)....

I hadn't realised it could be so easy to make money.

What sort of other "non-working" products do you think stupid rich people would buy?

I have a fantastic retro-chic (circa 1994) VHS Video Recorder in the loft - it doesn't work. It's a snip at £75,000. Smile Any takers?

I did hear this, at 5am yesterday morning. If it's the one on the web, it's a Swiss firm that made them last year, limited to 2012 pieces, and they started out around £75,000 - presumably there's now a thriving private market. Other than by those who bought them, the concensus seemed to be that it was a ghoulish thing to do.

I thought he laboured the "what the discerning customer wants" thread on the back of it, though. Basically, anything expensive that doesn't work.

That's why you need to be a discerning listener Ron when it comes to Alex, Very Happy .... why have new threads when you can just dig up an old one? ........ It's a rare gift! Smile If it's in bad taste , it's sure to get a big mention on the BTOTDS - some things beg to be talked about. When you live an upside down life, you see things from under the shelf up- it's a bit like being a tin of Tomato Soup in Tescos: not the glamorous end of the shop but for some customers , you're all they go in for, because there's nothing quite like a tin of Tomato Soup - yummy!

Imagine you are a tin of tomato soup, three rows back on the second shelf down in Tescos. You don't feel all that special, you're just a tin of Tomato Soup.

The most you have to look forward to is one of your mates being bought , so you maybe get faced up by the overnight staff. Then one day through the crowds of passing shoppers, you see someone different, she's walking slowly, patiently waiting while the other shoppers go about their near frenzy of over indulgence. She doesn't have a trolley, not even a basket.

She wouldn't look out of place on the cover of a magazine but somehow you can just tell she would never agree to do that. You keep an eye on her as she gracefully makes her way in your direction. Then she stops right in front of your shelf, you think to yourself one of those lucky guys at the front is going to be chosen, but no, what's this , she's looking through the gloom towards you, she takes a good long look. You can see all the tins of soup on the front row puffing out their chests' and yelling pick me pick me but you know even if you did puff your chest out, she wouldn't see you. Then she reaches out in your direction and pulls you, yes you, out into the daylight. Wow you think, she's going to read my label, but she doesn't , she turns, ignoring all the other delicious provender and prandial delight on offer, then carries you straight to a checkout.

She waits her turn while a mountain of food on the conveyer is placed into plastic bags for the person ahead in the queue. She places you, just you, carefully onto the conveyer . You hear the words "do you have a Club Card Madam"?, she looks at the checkout girl in a way that says, what is a club card? She pays for you and gently places you into her handbag amongst her most precious and secret possessions. She takes you out into the car-park and now you're thinking , ah this is where I get stuffed into a plastic bag and thrown into the boot of a Mini Metro but no. She walked to Tescos, just for you. In the rain! You've never felt like this before. She carries you into her home, takes you from her bag and places you on a kitchen worktop. You take a deep breath and say to yourself ... dent me, dent me, I must be dreaming. She takes off her coat and hangs it on the back of a tall kitchen stool. She takes out a shiny stainless steel saucepan, then takes a tin opener and removes your lid. You thought it would hurt more than that but her gentle touch numbs all pain. She pours you into the saucepan then places the pan onto a gas hob. A reassuring click click followed by the gentle woof of the burner lets you know that the heat is on. You watch her as she cuts a generous slice from a fresh home baked loaf then smothers it with real butter. She gently stirs you, then pours every last drop of you into a bowl, then places you and the bread onto a tray. What's going on ? She's cutting another slice of bread! You look around but you can see nobody else. She takes the second slice out into the garden , breaks it up and places it on a bird table. She's back , phew, she carries you into her conservatory then puts you on the table. She puts on some music - you've not heard it before but it sounds great. She sits and just looks at you - waiting and waiting with the sort of mouth-watering lust you've only ever read about.

Then she notices the first bird on the bird table, her cue to pick up her spoon. She slowly consumes every drop of you , using the last small piece of bread to wipe every last trace of you from the bowl. Now you're completely consumed you feel warm and safe as you drift off into a dreamy wonderland of bliss. As the lights dim and your final thoughts fade into fuzziness, one thought remains with unyielding clarity- out of all the zillions of tins of soup out there, she chose you.

That little piece actually reminds me of a school English essay I wrote (many moons ago, obviously) about an artificial hand which was waiting in line after manufacture, to be given to a serviceman who'd been injured in war - I think there had been a documentary on TV about the work of Sir Archibald McIndoe and the plastic surgery unit at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, which had left an impression on me.

I can't remember the exact words, but the anticipatory tone of my story was similar, although I seem to remember that, in jostling for attention to be picked up, fisticuffs with other hands ensued (as you might expect from the pen of an 11 year old boy!). My teacher was nevertheless impressed.

So, quite apart from being an entertaining read, you brought back a memory, (just about the only piece of written work that I can remember pre GCE O-Level), hence my reaction. Thank you, Rachel Very Happy

Thanks Ron Smile memories are precious. At the redemption of our lives' the best we can hope for is a positive equity of happy memories.

This weekend I finally got around to getting a new/different pair of earphones for my MP3 player. The rather fancy original ones came to a sad end during a domestic incident with a Dyson, quite a while back now. It's a long and painful story so I won't go into it here. ( What do you mean thanks? Smile )

At the time I needed a pair of earphones quickly, so I used the ones that came with my old Sony Discman thing ( from years ago) I never really got on with portable CD players, big clumsy things requiring a sack of CDs to be carried around and no radio!! You were lucky if the batteries lasted the distance of Dire Straits Alchemy. The most useless portable music system ever invented! However, the Sony earphones worked really well for quite a few months with my Mobiblu MP3 thing, but more recently they became a little intermittent and crackly. The one marked L ( presumably for left- does it make a difference?) got a little tetchy and stopped working. I could get around this problem by holding the wire in my teeth and pulling it tight across my face - bingo! The sound came through ok although every now and again the earphone would shoot out of my ear and hit me on the nose. On Friday however, while listening in my car , an unexpected bump in the road caused me to bite through the wire and guess what? Yep. The sound stopped in my left ear.

Saturday came and I thought - well I'm going to have to walk into town to get some new earphones. Bank Holiday weekend? Into Town? Think girl! It's a stay at home weekend- why do what everyone else does? It'll be packed out there! Odd concept I know but sometimes there's more space inside your house than outside. Anyway, I remembered a present a friend gave to me a few years ago, it's a Combined Radio/Rape Alarm ( for joggers- well it has lots of straps and things for attaching it to your body so I assume it's for joggers ). It's an unusual device in that it's quite a size( about half a tin of beans), bright pink, and has the words "Pull for Rape Alarm" in large lettering across the front. It has a build in radio and a parachute style rip cord for activating the alarm, which when activated sounds like a very very quite car alarm- and doesn't everyone come running when they hear one of those? I gave up jogging not long after receiving the gift- I'm not sure if it was the gift or my aging knees that prompted me to give up jogging but I did, so fortunately the combined FM Radio/Rape Alarm remains unused on both counts. I did remember that it came with a set of earphones though. Woohoo! Now where did I put it? Ah yes, where else? In the loft. A wee while later - new earphones without having to go to town! Yes! It's great being me!

So this morning is the first time listening to Alex through these new earphones and the first time for a while anyway without having wire cutting into my face, and he sounds a little different. Is it that Alex does sound different this morning? A cross between extremely happy and a wee bit snuffly? Or, are the earphones just different?

I thought he was having one of his clearer, less-snuffly mornings (I'd been woken up at 3 and just caught half an hour at low volume before drifting off again). Didn't seem to be too many truckers about and eager to join his recycling game (there had certainly been no shortage of them on the motorways earlier in the day).

I got an i-pod at Christmas but, having been used to big hi-fi hadphones for 30+ years the little stick-in-the-ear things are very uncomfortable, so I'm looking around for something in between.

It's not mandatory to take the photo yourself John Smile although I concede knees are not something that you can just walk up to someone in the street with and say hiya babe, would you mind taking a picture of my knees.. and before you get one trouser leg rolled up.......Thwack!

I didn't take the picture of my knees. Embarassed

Thanks for your comments on my knees, the left one is a little shy and makes an odd noise when I rollerblade; the right one can be a bit boisterous at times and has a cool underworld scar ( people in pubs take one look and say - that knee's seen some action Smile

Missed him altogether this morning, but I confess I was surprised when he mentioned previously that he leads a somewhat nomadic existence, booking and staying in different hotels (like Travelodges) by the single night. Considering the wonga they splash out on lesser mortals, I'd have thought the Beeb could have put him up in somewhere a bit more comfortable and a bit less transient.

Cyberspace will be relieved to know that it won't be carrying pictures of my short, fat, hairy knees, because my wizzo digital camera that cost a not inconsiderable amount two years ago has packed up, and I threw away its olde-worlde predecessor, which had lasted more than thirty but which weighed a ton.

You missed it!! Shocked

yeah I was surprised by that too Ron but apparently it's much less expensive to book last minute deals by the day. I don't think I could cope with all the packing and unpacking each day though, when I stay in a hotel , I "move in" for the duration. I guess with Alex and guys in general you don't have all that "stuff" we girlies cart around with us "just in case". When packing it's just , what you're wearing, plus a bag with a spare t-shirt.. boxers and a toothbrush?

Hey, short, fat, hairy knees are a valid and much loved social group within the wider knee community. They have much to contribute to the world at large, they deserve representation- stand up and let your knees be counted....

So Alex "got away with" yesterday's hotel heist, pretty much unscathed - leaving, in his legendary wake, the perfect blueprint for any would-be hotel-hoppers. And so to Lester Towers- two chipped mugs, a super king size duvet and a nice view. No Towel! ( 5 weeks in hotels and no towels? What kind of a hotel heist was that?) Yesterday's shirt - reasonably absorbent! he he.... Smile

This morning Alex was talking about badges and how they would make things easier if everyone wore a badge that sums them up- with details of who they are and what makes them tick......

What would your badge say about you?

here's mine

Name - Rachel

I'm falling behind in my recordings of the Dark Lord. Just how do you manage it Rachel?

Enjoyed the bank holiday show and the "blandities" but my week has been made by Alex's infectious giggling at the BBC compliance message Laughing What a lovely laugh!

Hello John, I'm so pleased you've posted a message- Very Happy it was starting to look like an obsession Smile... yeah ok you lot....I know, there's no need to say it..... Smile

Oh the recording thing is easy - use a MP3 FM recorder ( details above) ... then make sure Alex is the last thought you have before going to bed each night, that reminds you to press record. In the morning it's all done for you. The MP3 thing I have will hold about 30 shows depending on what time I go to bed. I'm not sure they're really designed to record 8 or 9 hours in one lump but they do, although now and again it gets jolly confused.

yeah the blandities were good - look at the craftsmanship on that Armco barrier- lovely galvanisation too...

I'm liking the boom conversation starters...

Ahh interesting Rachel. I do it slighty differently. I open up the computer in the morning and record off the listen again using Total Recorder and it auto stops more or less when the program finishes. Then pop it into itunes and listen in the night. Only very occasionally do I get to listen to Alex "live".

I'm just saying you could select a gear more appropriate to the speed!!

Ah you do it all on your PC. I'm at work 9 to 5 ish, we cannot get streaming audio through our firewall, so I have to use a portable option. ... means I can listen in my car/desk/hairdressers or wherever .... this morning for example ... listened live to the last 40 minutes of the show in bed ... then listened from the start as I drove to work over the mountains* in the early morning sun ... just me, a country mile or two** and Alex...... It doesn't get much better than that.

* rolling hills of Dorset

** well thirty odd

Nice parking - we can walk to the kerb from here... Smile
