Morning all!
JIMMY MIZEN - The terrible murder of Jimmy Mizen in south-east London on Saturday makes him the 13th teenager to be killed in the capital this year.
NO JABS, NO SCHOOL - Labour MP Mary Creagh has suggested that children who haven’t received all their vaccinations including the much debated MMR, should not be allowed to go to school.
SOCIAL CARE - The Government is planning to reform social care for the elderly. Do you worry about going into a home when you can no longer look after yourself?
CROWDED BEACHES - Were you one of the thousands of people that flocked to the crowded beaches over the weekend? Why?
Over to you now

The only contact I've had with a care home was when my elderly mother in law was in one for respite. She'd had a stroke and my father in law was determined to look after her at home but needed a rest.
It was a nice enough place but it was the other people who put the fear in me of what might happen when I get old. A long way off I'll add.

The most recent caller hit a big nail on the head with her comment. She talked about the way that the elderly are spoken down to or like they are small children. That is something that seems to go on in society in general. The elderly may be a little hard of hearing but most are perfectly articulate and can hold intelectual conversations but are treated like kids. Sadly once again it comes down to money, if you have the cash to stay in a decent home then they can be comfortable places but if you can't then the conditions can be quite run down. _________________

Yes that's true. I think the problems are when the person is ill rather than just old and maybe not able to maintain a home any longer.

2. No jab. No school? How many teachers have had the MMR jab? How about no sense - no MP?
3. Social care. I do worry about this , my in-laws are both in their 90s - still just about managing but it can't be long before they need some proper help. One of the reasons I'm giving up my career in two weeks time.
4 Nope: it was 28 degrees in our garden - we spent all day out there having fun - messing about with water and sun lotion . Drinking lots of ice cold milk ( me) and wine ( Hubby) then when we'd had enough: it took just 30 seconds to get home - no traffic, no parking charges, no carbon footprint....... fab!..
The beaches on the South Coast are overrated , over polluted, and full of half-naked oversized Brumies drinking beer . Not for me thanks. |

JIMMY MIZEN
As I've mentioned before, I believe in cases like this, the death penalty is appropriate. I agree with some of the callers that something just has to be done to these thugs to set a stern example.
The do-gooders have had their day and it isn't working.
SOCIAL CARE
It'll be interesting to see just how the Government is planning to reform the situation. If it means the taxpayer will pay for providing care then fine, but if it means there'll be more Home Help and Meals on Wheels then it'll be a disaster.
In most cases it just doesn't work or, provides the absolute minimum level of comfort for house bound elderly people.
I recently took on a married couple who were living "at home" - in other words, they spent all their time in one 10' x 12' ground floor room of their terraced house with two single beds, a tv and a table. The place stank to high heaven. (they had a bucket by the bed to urinate in.. )
They were barely walking skeletons; even though they had a carer calling on them twice a day for 20 minutes and cooking them boil in the bag meals...
You should see them now, much happier, able to go out, fed well and putting on weight, enjoying their son's visits - and, talking with other people!
A reasonably balanced case for and against Care Homes this time on today's show and yes, there are many "bad" homes but why are they allowed to continue trading? all homes are inspected from top to bottom, from staffing levels to the menus offered.
I'd like to have heard some residents opinions though...
If I knew how to put and audio link on here I would - from a BBC Radio Norfolk feature including an interview with some of our residents.
Would I worry about going into a care home? yes of course I would at my age, but if I was 80+ unable to wash myself and yearning for company and security, then a good quality home ( such as mine ) can be a life saver.
CROWDED BEACHES
I have a superb sandy beach about 100 yards from me and it too was crowded over the weekend but, I can't remember the last time I walked on it! not really my scene. _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07
