I just thought I'd say how much I have enjoyed listening to Simon Mayo this week while he's been covering for Ken Bruce. I suppose he's not exactly a dynamic presenter but I think comes across as a very pleasant one.
I share other peoples' disbelief at some of the nominees for the Sony radio awards - what are they thinking of? Confused

Yes, I think Simon's been great too. Not strayed from Ken's format but somehow made the slot his own.

It's a case of 'Gongs for her boys'. Douglas put them forward and she is supposedly also
on the panel!

Simon Mayo is a highly accomplished radio broadcaster, and a "home grown" BBC one at that, something which bucks the recent trend among recruits to the Radio 2 airwaves. I haven't heard much of his work on Radio 5 but I believe he is well-liked and highly rated there, as he was in his days on Radio 1. He could probably have any radio job that takes his fancy, but I won't speculate any further as to any motive behind his present sorties across Radio 2's daytime schedule, as holiday relief.

It is interesting that he has come onto the scene at the same time as Richard Allison has apparently disappeared from it. They are quite similar in style and sense of humour, and were born within a month of each other (they're both 50 this year), but Simon plays to an ostensibly slightly younger musical taste (less emphasis on the 70s).

It's the top-rated show on Radio 5 Live and is very good indeed. I wonder how many of his listeners are, like me, defectors from Steve Wright's show who've gone looking for a bit of intelligence?

This could be because he wasn't an LD signing.

I heard most of this mornings show and I too think he's a very amenable presenter. I haven't heard Simon for quite a while but in fact, I'd say I prefer listening to him than Ken Bruce, very nice voice for radio.
Wish we had him on Radio 2 permanently during the daytime...

Given time in Bruce's slot I think Mayo could really make something if that spot if he put his mark on it. Build up a bit of a better rapore with sally traffic, vine etc and I reckon he could work really well. Having said that I do still like Bruce so either way I'm a happy man.

Heard some of his last show this morning, before having to lock horns with V****n about an itinerant broadband connection. Obviously having a laugh, getting people to contact about "prog rock" and in response to requests for Nazareth and Motorhead playing Lily Allen and Will Young Laughing

(I do like that song by Neil Diamond he's been playing, though)

But if he came to Radio 2 I'd have no-one to listen to while Steve Wright's on!

Unless... Idea

Simon was certainly a big improvement on Drivetime yesterday. Much more of what a drivetime show should be like IMO. What a shame it was only for one day this week and this twit is back now http://www.pictogame.com/en/play/game/qFAbqyEGmnZs_my-kick-boy . 162,435. Not bad for a second, or was it third kick. I haven't even got Russell Brand that far yet!!

I had to endure an hour or so this evening whilst I finished painting outside.. " what would you prefer - an icecream stall or a burger stall?" Rolling Eyes
I could feel my pulse raise early in the show when he was shouting off that he's asked everybody he knew and that none of them had voted for Boris.. not even their friends voted for him...
I naturally drew a comparison to him hosting Drivetime. Nobody I know likes him! Razz

How far did you kick him then?
I still havent beaten my personal best on this one though http://www.pictogame.com/en/play/game/2jSr5fAi7avd_western-kick-girl
Mind you, that one is slightly more complicated than the other one.

We had SM on in the car on the way home, coming up a quite busy M5/M42. I know we shouldn't but it made us laugh when he asked the woman "impressing him" with her knowledge about bluebells whether the foreign ones outnumbered the indigenous ones and she didn't know what he meant.

I'm similarly blank whenever my son explains something about the PC.
