There has been a lot of focus on attempts to stop people using plastic carrier bags, typically picked up at supermarkets.
Just a thought that crossed my mind. Has any research been done to see which is the more environmentally harmful to produce, bin liners or carrier bags and are supermarkets seeing an increase in sales of bin liners as people stop using carrier bags _________________ Mig |

Boo, hiss, carrier bags are the root of all evil, it seems everyone is starting to jump on this bandwagon now. Really when you think about it a certain country across the pond pollutes the planet so much that us using one less carrier bag or two will not save the planet I'm afraid.
Besides global warming is a huge con, what's your carbon footprint they ask, my answer I couldn't give a flying leap. |

By virtue of the fact that Britain was the first country to industrialise, the UK has produced more pollution than any other country in history. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Yep, but stopping using carrier bags isn't going to change that. |

I don't see the link between bin liners and carrier bags... are shoppers collecting their shopping in bin liners now? if not, why aren't they? two jobs from one bag.
I went to Homebase yesterday to buy lightbulbs and they use brown paper bags, much better.
Has anybody seen a bio degradable plastic bag in it's last years? I have some I used to wrap things in up in the roof. It's really strange because they just disintegrate as you touch them.... or did everybody know that?

Is that true? I didn't know that.
However, I noticed on the TV programme " The Great Global Warming Conspiracy", they said Co2 levels actually reduced around the time of the industrial revolution...
( I sat outside Tesco's today in gale force conditions and got quite depressed about the whole thing... I watched countless plastic bags blowing across the car park and out over people's properties and getting stuck in the shrubs lining the road and beyond that over and into the stretch of water which is a bird sanctuary and part of the Norfolk Broads..
I looked at the hideous monstrosity of a building which is as basic as you can build one - basically a giant tin shed with Tesco on it, and the mostly bad tempered people dragging their kids and loading their cars to the axles with bags and bags of shopping.
Then, the lazy sods just push their trolleys away into the next car park bay! can't be bothered to return the trolley to the bay! oh no..
It didn't used to be like this did it? we all survived popping across the road to the corner shop to get what we wanted for the day - not a whole month!
and Wagon Wheels were bigger too ) _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

There is many a person out there who will line their waste paper bin with a plastic carrier bags once the shopping has been emptied. Their is your link. Get rid of the plastic carrier bag and people will buy the real thing!! _________________ Mig |

Someone on the R2 news yesterday was saying that this plastic bag thing is being taken too far as it's only a tiny part of the problem. I agree with him, can't stand carrying a shopping bag so get fresh ones everytime - they smell out the boot of the car if you leave them in there anyway. In any case I use them again for other things.

Using carrier bags once, is a bit like using dinner plates only once & then binning them. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |

Why don't we do what they do in the States? Supermarkets should ditch plastic carrier bags and replace with strong, brown paper bags! |

They don't use the paper ones anymore, but use even more flimsy versions than ours.

Hi Miggy,
I meant to say 'hello' when I replied, but had hit the submit button before I remembered.
A mixture of Tesco, Sainsbugs or Morrisons in answer to your question!

It does indeed.
Well seeing as I live only a mile and a half from an out of town, late closing one, it does have it's attractions . As my other half said once to a friend of ours 'the M&S van calls off at our house first before making it's deliveries'! Mind their food isn't as good as it used to be!
