It seems Planet rock has been bought but sadly not by Brian May.
See below an entry on Brian's blog today, shame, wonder what will become of it now.
**Thu 29 May 08**
PLANET ROCK SNATCHED
Well, I'm sitting here with jaw open. We just found out that GCAP, the owners of Planet Rock, have sold the station to a third party, without so much as mentioning their change of plan to us.
Our chaps have been pressing on with GCAP's lawyers, finalising the arrangements, the principles having been agreed a few weeks ago, but, out of the blue, we heard a rumour that someone else was involved, and this morning someone 'unofficially' confirmed that rumour.
Planet Rock is now out of reach.
All I can say is I'm shocked and hugely disappointed. What a way for people to behave. I suppose that's what you can expect from the corporate world these days.
We have no idea if the people who have bought Planet Rock plan to keep it running or not. I guess we can just hope that it will still be 'saved', but without us ...
It's such a shame ... we had such plans ...
Well, there ya go. Thanks GCAP. Thanks for a load of wasted time. Well, it's still a small world.

It makes you wonder if there should be an 'R' inserted between the 'C' & 'A' in those initials. _________________ Lord Evan Elpuss, Your ideal job is a Lumberjack. |

On Emmerdale I heard one character say something about 'going to Planet Miserable'!
So have the King brothers (in the show, not Denis 'Hello Cheeky' King's lot) taken it on? _________________ We made a land where crap is king and the good don't last for long.

I doubt Brian May owns it? Maybe ploughed money into it to keep it open. |

According to Radio Today, it's been bought by one Malcolm Bluemel, a bloke who's previously-paid large amounts on the "auction for things money can't buy" to play golf with Wogan and cruise on the QE2 with Ken Bruce. No radio background at all! |

Update below
Digital-only radio station Planet Rock has been taken over by a team including Black Sabbath's Tony Iommi, Jethro Tell star Ian Anderson, Marillion's Fish and Gary Moore.
The buyout is financed by Malcolm Bluemel, a millionaire businessman and rock fan.
Bluemel said: "The people at Planet Rock and their listeners are passionate about their music and their station, which is why I wanted to step in and help make it happen.
"It has an authenticity and integrity booming out of it. Now we aim to take it to the next level, preserve all that's great about the output and utilise other platforms to serve an even bigger audience in a wider variety of ways."
Queen guitarist Brian May was part of another group hoping to take over the station, which GCap Media said it intended to close earlier this year. |

Excellent! I think all of those mentioned have been featured on the station many times so I'm not surprised at this news.
I wonder what they mean by other platforms? FM and Freeview maybe? _________________ Johnnie Walker read out my message on Pirate Radio! 13/8/07

"other platforms" usually means "internet" nowadays. |

DRM (Digital Rights Management) isn't a distribution platform, it's a security encryption/decryption system. And DAB is dying fast....
Web dissemination (via either wired or wireless streaming) is what is generally meant by "other platforms". _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |
