So what's gonna happen here.
President Robert Mugabe vows that the main opposition party will never lead Zimbabwe.
Is this country heading for civil war?

Not for as long as Fascist Mugabe oppresses, arrests, imprisons and otherwise stifles any opposition.
In fact....... What opposition? _________________ ONline, ONdigital and ONtherocks: BBC Radio 2. Eleanor Rigby, wearing the face that she keeps in a jar by the door. |

Why doesn't the UK intervene?
Then again, could it do anything?
Is it staying out, as some have alleged, because there's no oil involved?
Would be interested to know what others think.

Zimbabwe is landlocked, so you'd have to have the consent of one of their neighbours to stage aircraft and troops through/over.
There's no oil in the 'Stan AFAIK so the "No War For Oil" argument doesn't necessarily hold up either.
Bearing in mind we're pretty overstretched anyway at the moment, we can't offer much more than harsh words against Mugabe. I suspect the Americans feel the same as they probably don't want to get bogged down in another potential Somalia - and their economy might not handle a third conflict.
Mugabe is going down the road of so many dictators in the past - blaming everyone else for his poor management of the country, effectively banning any opposition and creating his own private army of pseudo-stormtroopers (the "Veterans") to carry out intimidation, reprisals and threats towards those who don't toe the ZANU-PF party line.
The Robert Mugabe Guide to Winning: Fear that you're going to lose an election? Ban the opposition from advertising, holding rallies and speaking to the foreign press. Think that the vote will go against you? Don't relinquish power. Tell the world it is a trick by the UK and USA to discredit you, rig the ballot boxes, lose some in the process and threaten people who you know will vote against you. Jail the opposition leader for good measure - after all, he must be in on this grand conspiracy, and charge others with treason. Thumb your nose up at the world and attend conferences in Europe using your government-sponsored jet whilst your people starve.... _________________ Author: “To the Ends of the Earth: A Snapshot of Aviation in North-Eastern Siberia, Summer 1992”

The agricultural value of the land means that it is equally valuable these days. I agree with Cherisky in that you would need a neighbour to assist an intervention. It would be better for the neighbours to be persuaded to sort Mugabe out themselves TBH. _________________ His name was ernie ........ and he drove the fastest milk cart in the west..... |
