Last night (Sunday, 18th May), Alan Titchmarsh played a rather bizarre track. The lyrics went "You do look queer". It was sang by an old man.

I wonder what else is in Titchy's personal record collection?!

I think you are reading too much in to it. Wink

Do you reckon?! The lyrics made me laugh so much (although the wine also contributed to that, too!). Even Alan had a little chuckle afterwards!

Plenty of songs with gay in the title as well that could interest you?

Only if they were in the same context as the track Alan played last night! It was one of those tracks that just about sums up a lot of things about his playlist!

Or maybe Ricky Nelson singing 'Am I blue?' which has the lines 'Am I gay? I should say!' Laughing

It was sung by Stanley Holloway, and was one of his monologues. Haven't heard it in years but very amusing.

A bit before you time, but he was in the stage and (?) I think the film version of My Fair Lady.

You are quite correct HM. He did quite a few monologues - one of which was about Albert who was eaten by a lion because he kept poking it with his stick. Rolling Eyes

The stick with the 'horse's head handle', I think you'll find - the 'finest that Woolworths could sell'.

Ah - many a lovely memory of my late great grandmother telling me that story as a child in her finest south yorkshire accent. So often, that I can re-tell it verbatim now - 10 years on since her passing. Does anyone else keep up the oral tradition (no janet-and-john style jokes desired there...)?

Sarah Kennedy should try her hand at the monologue - malapropisms included of course... perhaps with a horse's head handlington from Sainsbugs Wink

Well, I only heard the song because my housemate (aged 44) listens to Melodies for You. Rolling Eyes

I am definitely going to request the song for All Request Friday! I wonder if Chris Evans would dare to play it?! Razz

I was trying to think of that one on Sunday night! Wasn't it set in Blackpool or is it my imagination?

Thanks for this web site Rocket Ron, have put it in my Favourites. My grandson's class recently enacted The Battle of Hastings for their open assembly. Despite their Lincolnshire accents they had been coached in a broad Yorkshire accent for this and it was hilarious. I always enjoyed Stanley's monologues and have fond memories of my Dad reciting them at family parties.

Mark, I know Alan Titchmarsh is married (he's often talking about his wife and family). I was not insinuating that Alan is gay!

Apparently he (Alan) is sporting some new sideburns which have been causing a stir.

I noticed that the other night when he was presenting the Chelsea Flower Show. Those sideburns make him look like the Incredible Hulk.

Didn't Sam Cooke use the line 'where the people are so gay' in Twistin' The Night Away? My brother would sing this to my sister, who was a big fan of Queen, though he knew Rod Stewart's version better than Cooke's.

Hadn't heard the show for sometime but caught a section of this week's on a car journey.

We had great fun singing along to Harry Belafonte's There's a Hole in My Bucket.

Tales from the Vienna Woods has been a favourite of mine ever since I heard some of it on both sides of a 78 and it made a good longer listen.

Another long-standing favourite of mine is Cyril Scott's Water Wagtail but I never knew before that it was once the sig tune of R3's cricket coverage. You can tell that cricket isn't my game!

Ian.

Hi Ian,

We were listening in the car as well on our way home from Newcastle after attending the last open day of my school which closes for good this week.

It had been quite emotional, as expected, but when Alan played 'Velia' from the Merry Widow I got a huge lump in my throat as we had performed the song at the annual prize giving at the City Hall many years ago.
