They want them to be digital only before the switch over, only because DAB is not catching on.

I hope they don't as I've no intention of buying a digital radio until the change over. My Dad bought one and has thrown it away as he hates having to scroll for the stations and he says the text is far too small to read at just a glance.

I'm still not happy with the DAB radios at all. The signal is at best patchy and I just don't understand the fuss made about the scrolling text. It's often only a description of the show and the contact details.

I think they should be concentrating on getting 5Live onto FM before fannying around putting 1+2 on DAB.

I'm far from impressed too.
I have two DAB radios, the one with a telescopic aerial won't pick up BBC programmes but the other, with a dangly wire aerial will! but only if it's in exactly the right location.
But the reception isn't great, I get a squawky burble sometimes and give up.
I can't see any real benefit in DAB at all compared to FM. In fact, the old recordings of Radio 1 I made on cassettes back in the 80s sound just as good..... only it was called VHF then. Razz

I think DAB is another case of totally overhyping something as always happens in the video audio world.
I read something recently saying you shouldn't buy DAB as it isn't very good and you should wait for DAB 2 (I think).
A little while ago they were saying DAB is totally amazing and it's just like being in the room with the musicians!!!!!!!

Isn't it a weak market to start and put 1 & 2 on too just digital? They need too keep the FM platform running to make sure the listeners still keep tuned in. Not all have just digital, and people don't want to always listen to the radio through their TV sets. TV's were designed for TV shows with pictures, not blank screens and Radio shows.

It was probably an idea the Government purposed to the BBC? Good joke. Shocked

We have a DAB as part of our home HiFi, it works really well ( until I put the fan oven on in the kitchen- makes it go all... chrrrhhhhrrrhhrhhhrhhhssshhhrrrhhhh). The text is just there,, I don't read it that often but now and again it's useful to find out what is playing. The problem about switching over to DAB isn't so much about everyone buying "a" DAB to listen in the house - we have loads of radios - bedside alarm - one here in the office - one in the greenhouse , kitchen and one in my dressing room - there's the one in each of our cars - there's my personal radio too ( part of my MP3) so that's quite a pile of radios to replace, and that ain't gonna happen overnight..... The sound quality of DAB isn't as good as FM - it's ok but it's not great, there's a massive difference in the depth of sound - the warmth isn't there with DAB- a very clincal sound , you can see it, hear it but you can't feel it....

I've only heard DAB stations on my two cheapo DAB radios, an Alba portable Embarassed and a £15 bedside clockradio from Tesco so I haven't heard the full glory of it but if it's not that good, why the heck do we have to change over??

I've been terribly disappointed in the sound from DAB when I've asked for a demonstration in the stores that sell them - I know that city centres are notorious for poor reception of anything, but if it's new technology you expect it to be good. (The same can also be said for the sound quality of MP3/I-pods - they're OK if you want sound "on the move" and invest in headphones, rather than the vile earplugs that come with them, but otherwise, forget it.)

I get digital radio courtesy of Virgin cable tv, and occasionally make use of it to listen to Planet Rock, or Iain Anderson's late night show on BBC Radio Scotland, but I wouldn't miss it if it wasn't there. Good "old" FM still sounds fine to me - if it ain't broke why change it?

If people want DAB to take off, they should put it in cars and stop faffing around with these single-speaker retro radios. Simple as that.

Hardly anyone would be able to get R2 in motor vehicles & people would be up in arms at having to replace otherwise excellent expensive hi-fi's with new equipment during a worldwide economic squeeze.

I do think some ego was pulling someones leg at the Radio Festival.
