On Sunday Aled Jones played the Lord's My Shepherd to the tune of Amazing Grace, which is actually a more commonly used coupling than he may have thought.

He asked for more examples of unusual couplings.

A friend of mine used to collect these and here are a few:

For All the Saints to We'll Gather Lilacs

Lead Kindly Light to the Rain in Spain

Jerusalem the Golden to the theme tune of Dallas (particularly apposite, as the 'old' tune to JTG is called Ewing)

While Shepherds Watched to Ilkley Moor (by now a well-established coupling and one which has come full circle, as Ilkley Moor was itself adapted from an old Methodist tune called Cranbrooke)

Have I missed any?

Ian.

Can't think of any that have actually been recorded. If I put my mind to it I expect I could come up with plenty of pop tunes that would fit old hymns, and I'm faintly surprised, since "crossover" seems to be an industry buzzword, that someone hasn't already thought of it and produced an album of them.

I cannot by any stretch of imagination be said to be a regular churchgoer, but I am a traditionalist where hymn tunes are concerned and I hate it when an alternative (ie, less familiar) one is used, or when people try to write new tunes for them (usually because they're devoid of all tune).

Thanks, Ron.

I accept that church music has to move with the times and some of the modern songs, such as those by Graham Kendrick, are well worth hearing but I disagree with wholesale removal of familiar tunes.

Of course, in some cases there's no agreement on what is the 'right' tune for a hymn. For example, just off the top of my head I can think of at least five tunes for For the Beauty of the Earth. Roger Royle used to major in this topic when he presented Sunday Half-Hour (by the way, don't forget that RR is on Good Morning Sunday this week).

I thought of one more, which is to be found in, I think, Redemption Hymnal--I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say to the tune of Drink to Me Only with Thine Eyes. There are lots more still, of course, for others of you to identify!
