Chris Tarrant is to return to radio after four years to host a Saturday-morning show for GMG Radio that will pit him against Jonathan Ross.
The Chris Tarrant Show, the first time Tarrant has hosted a regular radio show since leaving Capital Radio in 2004, launches on July 26, and will be on air from 10am to 1pm.
Tarrant will go head to head against Jonathan Ross on BBC Radio 2.
The show will be broadcast on eight of GMG's stations, including Smooth in London; Real Radio in Wales, Scotland and Yorkshire and Century Radio in the north-east and north-west.
Tarrant's new show, described as a "fresh, engaging and entertaining listen", will also be available on Sky and through Freeview.
The new show will be sponsored by Nissan Micra and produced by Head on Media.
GMG Radio is part of the Guardian Media Group, which also owns MediaGuardian.co.uk.

| Thats Mark Goodier, Tony Blackburn & Fiona Phillips shows so far networked on Smooth radio. Hopefully they can iron out the News links with Tony's weekend breakfast? |

Smooth is definetly going to give Radio 2 some serious competition going forward.
They have signed up some very good presenters-I can see them going from strength to strength. |

You could... Graham Dene, Tony Blackburn, Chris Tarrant, Lynn Parsons, Andy Peebles.
However they are all, with the exception presumably of Peebles, saddled with the bland and boring Smooth playlist, so it depends if you want to listen to the music or to them.
(This morning they've played just two tracks that are less than 20 years old - Laura Critchley's ersatz country-style song and Sharleen Spiteri's solo single that's about as exciting as the matronly outfit she wore on Graham Norton's show last week)

Well, yes. That's why I won't be listening. Some people on this board seem to think that the sole reason for listening to show is because of the 20 second chit-chat between songs. |

It's a kick in a teeth for the BBC. GMG are getting on employing the top broadcasters over the last 30 years, whilst Radio 2 could end up turning into a celebrity obsessed station. Also whilst GMG are employing well known radio broadcasters the BBC will be scratching their heads who's going to replace Wogan, as he can't last forever?
This doesn't mean I'm not listening to Radio 2, but how can people criticise GMG when they are doing a good job. |

There is a lot of generalisation about commercial radio. There are good shows if you seek them out. Radio 2 has its share of dross as well (datyime presenters pay heed!)

| I'll give it a go when it starts ..... as long as there isn't too many adverts it should be ok...... having said that Radio 2 is stuffed full of adverts these days - just this morning in fact, about ten to ten and advert for Wake up to Wogan - did he even have his coat on by then? Bring back the Chris and Tel trailers....... |

Tarrant has also promised his new show would be "devoid of playlists". He said he only came back to radio because he was given "complete editorial control" to play whatever music he liked.
"Having my own music policy is important to me because too many stations play the same tunes," he said. "I am going to play everything from Amy Winehouse and Duffy to rare tracks by the Stones and The Who. I'm just fed up with this obsession with play-lists and focus groups."
He said too many stations were scared to play anything other than music that was in the top 10.
"People want to listen to songs that mean something to them," he said. "Fans of John Lennon want to hear his rare stuff - not just Imagine. I think playing this stuff too much is unfair on the artist, too. A classic track gets ruined because it's overplayed."
Broadcastnow.co.uk broke the news of Tarrant's GMG show - his first permanent radio role since quitting Capital in 2004 - earlier this week.
The Chris Tarrant Show will go out on eight of GMG's stations including Smooth in London, Real Radio in Wales, Scotland and Yorkshire and Century Radio in the north-east and north-west.
It will air on Saturdays between 10am and 1pm from 26 July, pitching Tarrant against Jonathan Ross on BBC Radio 2. But the presenter played down the competition. "It's not a battle at all - but the press likes to say it is. I have gone up against Wogan and Moyles in the past, so it's no big deal." |

Fair enough. Just sounds a case of right man, wrong station, at least as far as the Smooth ones (London, East & West Midlands) are concerned.

The population of the US is a bit larger than the 3 dozen who listen to Radio 2 online.
US radio quality depends on where you are. It is great in the cities, God awful in some rural areas, but satellite radio is catching on fast. Last time I was there, I was in a hifi store browsing and noticed the in car satellite radios are now well under $100 each.

Yep you ain't wrong there Ernie, America is quite big but most of it is just empty space. ( It's like a 12" Single) Went there a while back ( popped over from Canada for an Ice-cream) ... ...

Yes, that's to ensure a national coverage for the show; Real/Century aren't represented in those three areas, but their format is better suited to CT. I suspect he will be as welcome to the regular listeners of Smooth as Jonathon Ross is to many Radio 2 listeners, especially those of SOTS which he follows.
