Along with my more or less permanent moan about the lack of light music on R2, I've also noted its absence from the concert halls in this region.
So I was delighted when our Northern Sinfonia, which we usually hear featuring symphonic repertoire, put on a concert of English light music at the Gateshead Sage yesterday evening, under the title given above.
It consisted of pieces by Eric Coates, Robert Farnon, Ernest Tomlinson, Haydn Wood and many others. The orchestra evidently enjoyed its involvement with music that I imagine it doesn't often get the chance to perform and conductor John Wilson (local lad made good) interspersed the musical offerings with a witty and informed commentary. Mrs W, not usually a fan of this kind of music, was very appreciative and was even heard to be humming the closing Knightsbridge March well after the concert.
But what a disappointment to find the hall only about one-third full! I think that more could have been done on the marketing side but those who weren't there missed a real treat. I can only hope that the sparse attendance doesn't put the Sage off giving this type of concert another try at a later date.

That's the kind of thing my parents would enjoy, but I doubt they knew it was on.
Do the Sage tend to advertise locally?

Thanks for this. We found out about it from the Sage booklet of events in July and August, which we get automatically as we go to the subscription concerts and are hence on the mailing list. It was also mentioned on the Sage website. This will have circulated the event quite widely amongst those already in the loop. But I didn't see it advertised anywhere else and was disappointed not to see it in the Light Music Society magazine, which frequently advertises events like this across the country. Maybe next time...

I've had a trawl around here and there's nothing for the light music afficianado. It's just unfashionable at the moment, but in the cycle of things I'm sure it's not lost for good (are they not remaking The Dam Busters? Cue revival of Eric Coates music ) _________________ Ron |

Apparently the Light Music Society (of which I'm a member) were never officially informed about the event. I did let them know myself as soon as I heard about it but by that time it was too late to get an ad into the magazine in advance. I've sent a review in for publication at a later date.
