So let's see - you're still going to pay the new rates of VED even if you bought your car up to six years ago.

Hmm - so if you want to be responsible and change it for something less damaging to the planet and your wallet, you'll take a huge hit in the part-exchange value (because who's going to buy it from you?) or end up sticking with your supposed "gas-guzzler" and paying through the nose even if you only drive it say 3000 miles a year, as your wages (because of the current pay deals) won't let you switch to a newer and cleaner vehicle. Either way people on low incomes are going to lose out financially - the very people who can't afford extra costs. The rich, of course, won't miss a few hundred quid more a year, so nothing changes for them....

Maybe the Government should tax people on having kids - I can just hear "Heathcliffe" now - "Families with five children are polluting more as they require bigger vehicles. I therefore propose to introduce a new tax which will discourage people from having bigger families." Rolling Eyes

Checking out the new rates I've discovered that my relatively recent attempt to own a greener car was a waste of time! My old car ( a real global warming gas guzzler- exciting to drive - sex on wheels machine that it was)was in the top band of the current system- so I changed it ( at great expense) my new car puts out 182g/KG which is band E(£165) in the current system ( less than my old car ) but in the new system, my new car is band J- £270 .......and you're thinking well you shouldn't drive a big gas guzzler Rachel ...

It's a Ford KA - do cars come any bleeding smaller!

Yep, looking at the rates for my little 1.4 Fiesta Zetec (like Rachel, I decided a few years ago to buy a smaller/less polluting car), but I see it is in the same band as a 2-litre BMW320d!

Maybe I should have just kept my hugely-polluting 97' plate 2-litre Vectra and ran it into the ground instead....
