Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is to unveil plans to shock young people who carry knives into a greater awareness of the impact of stabbing on victims.

These knife crimes are shocking, but I don't think this would work as it won't shock the offenders. |

What happens if the thugs walk in and laugh at the victims?
I understand each knife death is a great tragedy, each murder is a great tradegy. They get lots of attention in the news headlines.
But look,
Twice as many people die AT WORK than are murdered, and most deaths are due to poor management - with a hint of manslaughter in their circumstances (I don't mean corporate manslaughter, I mean a bad manager who has not trained or protected his staff)
And maybe FOUR or even SIX times as many people commit suicide every year. Suicide is the biggest cause of death in the age group 18-35 |

| Anyway Home Secretary Jacqui Smith back tracked and said " She wasn't going to send Offenders into Hospitals" If it was a pack of lies at least it got the press writing about it and people thinking? |

Maybe ignorant reporters are responsible for the confusion? I'm not sure if Jacqui Smith has back-tracked, I'd need to see the interviews/speech and her words/mouth.
I believe she said the idea was among 'proposals'. Now, taking an old-fashioned meaning I read a 'proposal' as something 'for consideration' but in modern English it seems to mean 'intention' and I wonder if she meant the former and the reporters took the latter as the meaning.
I mean like when a man proposes to a woman he is offering something to her for consideration. The intention to be married only becomes 'an intention' when she says YES!
Maybe Jacqui did 'intend' but has back-tracked, but as I say I'd need to see the interviews or speech that she made.
Rather than proposals maybe she should have used the word 'options', that's modern English for 'a list of things to choose from'.
But if the idea was to be implemented just think of the number of police and social workers that would need to accompany the knifeman for the visit. What a daft idea.
